An awesome adventure across an amazing landscape. Make sure you prep and pack correctly. Very quick changes in weather here and there have been some horrible stories. Other than that it's an incredible hike and unforgettable!
Absolutely phenomenal. Once in a lifetime trip and I highly suggest you take the opportunity to do it if you're physically able. I took over 250 pictures so I'll leave that to the true professionals but will gladly say it was worth my while. Check the weather before going, we actually overpacked a little, but be prepared for a full day of walking! It took us just under 8 hours, intermediate fitness, late 30s - early 40s couple.
An amazing adventure for our little family of 4. We went there to celebrate our son's first birthday. It was my first snow trip as well. I absolutely loved it. The beauty took over the senses and left us mesmerized.
This is the best hiking experience you can find in the North Island, considering Tongariro is one of the worlds oldest national park. After extensive research, this hike was difficult about 7/10 I would say with my above average fitness level. DOC estimates around 7-8 hours to hike but I managed to complete it in around 6 hours one way with the last couple hours being the easiest walk. You will also need to arrange a shuttle at the beginning, I highly recommend which is priced around $35 depending on the websites. Overall I highly recommend this hike to anyone, every steps is worth it at the end.
We did the Tongariro Alpine Crossing track and it was one of the best day hikes we did so far! Definitely worth it if you are in the area! A few tips to make your trip better: * book a shuttle in advance because the car park is limited to 4 hours only and the hike takes between 6 to 9 hours depending on how fast you walk, how many breaks you take for pictures, etc * there is no shop/restaurant or anything on the track so make sure you have enough water and snacks with you. I would recommend 1.5 - 2 liters. * good footwear is required! This is a volcanic track so some parts are a bit slippery because of the volcanic terrain. Hiking boots with good ankle support would be best in my opinion * take a wind jacked with you, gloves and a beanie. A part of the track was particularly windy and it is easy to get cold up there if you are not dressed properly. * photo tip: take a time-lapse with the volcano The clouds move very fast and they create an amazing view Note: check the weather before! You will not be able to see anything if the weather is bad :
Great views, definitely a challenging walk and not for the ill-prepared. Please bring water and adequate food, the hike is longer than most people assume. But the views are absolutely spectacular, really a place to check out for nature lovers who don't mind a longer stroll.
Gorgeous park!! Many great views. Be sure to wear study shoes if you have ankle problems. I rolled my ankle a few times on some loose rocks. There is a track near Tongariro Chateau that takes you to a waterfall in under 2.5 hours/ 4km . Highly recommend!
We really loved our day visit. We enjoyed 2 great walks to waterfalls & also drove up to the top carpark, where although the bottom gondola station was hidden in the mists, the volcanic landscape en route was truly eerie & spectacular. The DOC Visitors Centre had great staff & an excellent movie about vulcanism
Enjoyed a hunting trip over the weekend with some mates, Renovations completed on Waihohonu hut on Friday, looks spectacular. Hut was nice and clean upon arrival, plenty of fire wood to keep you warm durning a cold winter's night
Amazing volcanoes! Loved the alpine crossing hike and taranki falls hike! The red crater and Mt. Ngaauruhoe and Mt. Ruapehu were mind blowing!! Was also able to see the milky way in the night!
