Ehhhh, okay, so went here from year 7-9, and it was genuinely when my mental stability went down. The other students there mainly, bullied and were rlly rude, and that wouldn’t be the schools fault, but, it is because they don’t do anything. My friend tried getting back at a guy who bullied me and yet we had to apologise to him and him to us as if he meant it which he didn’t, he didn’t mean it bc he immediately called my friend a btch after the teachers left. And also the dress code, banning facial hair?? I don’t have it but it’s a stupid rule to restrict something NATURAL. Yknow. That people have?? And can’t stop from growing?, anyways. The school itself is fine, the environment, the food there even isn’t that bad loved the butterchicken pie. The main issue is no punishment for the rude kids, I told my couseller abt the bullying and she said the classic “you don’t know what goes on in their home”, I’m not a punching bag. But yeah, other than that, genuinely the school is fine, just discipline and the dress code, most student where are ableist, or just yknow, any sort of problematic, all I really want, is for the school to be a safer place for students, so that they can go to school and enjoy it, without being discriminated against. -coming from a past student ‍
went here from year 7-10, dropped out and got far away happily. when I first started here, we were allowed to express ourselves in anyway we wanted. hair dyed, pierced, facial hair having, etc. in year 10, we got a new principal, and all of that was taken away. which was basically the only thing papamoa college had going for itself. individuality. this school also allows so much bullying, wannabe gang behavior and general violence. I was bullied intensely from year 7-8, my teacher spoke ONCE to the peers responsible and there was no further punishment. or any punishment at all. there were fights happening every other day-- like genuinely, try sitting on the field at lunch time, you'll get front row seats to a teenage pummeling match. the education is not overtly terrible unless you have any learning impediments, then it's honestly not great. I have autism and dyspraxia, the way I learn and correspond to learning is definitely not the same as neurotypical students, and until I was year 10, this factor was ignored. the learning programs are honestly very scarce, if you wanted to participate in a course to do with your future job, you'd have to do it out of school. not totally the schools fault, but still an issue. the school will expel and suspend children for having piercings that pre-dated the piercing rules, will tell them to simply "not come to class until the issue is fixed" to do with facial hair, coloured hair and piercings alike. I know two people who have been been on in-school detention not allowed to leave the deans office unless end of day, including not allowed to leave during intervals for having piercings, as well as a student sent out of school until some semi-permanent hair colouring was removed. the education is not terrible but not totally receptive. the individuality rules have been stripped, and many are not happy about this. fairly so. this school is not receptive pretty much at all to those with serious behavioural disorders either. don't send your children here unless you want them to be discriminated against, a self-employed gang member, a bully, bland and without personality or a nicotine addict.
This is an amazing school and its very good for kids to learn and now there are hardly any fights going on at school anymore because of the new principle. So, I would personally recommend this school out of any other school for kids to learn.
Biggest flaw of this school has to be the students in it and the cleanness of the school. Some people act like they are gangsters and "cool", some harass other people, some people vandilize stuff, etc etc + stealing. and the main source of the bad hygiene of the school is the students in it vandilizing and throwing food. you are really letting absolutely everyone in this school, and it is overcrowded. Maybe don't let so many people in, especially the bad kind of people if you want to protect the school public reputation.
This school under the new principal has made tangible improvements to its culture and discipline over the last two years.
Scraps or fights are quite common at this school, it's almost nearly every lunchtime that you see a big crowd of people gathered on the field in a circle watching a scrap. The people usually involved in these scraps are kids who think they are in a gang. From years 9-10 nearly 30% of them have vaped or have a vape. Usually in the P.E changing rooms, not to mention if you're trying to get changed in a cubicle. Expect your door to be bashed in whenever you are trying to get your gear on. If this happens I highly suggest putting your bag against the door. Generally there are a handful of people who give the school a bad reputation, but apart from what I said above the school is actually pretty cool.
Went here from yr 7-13. Don’t send your kid here unless you don’t care about their education. Open plan was the worst idea to exist, 5 classes in 1 all you can hear is yelling coming from the other classes, it’s way too loud to focus on your work. So over crowded around 40-50 students in 1 class with 1 teacher. The teachers absolutely suck & do NOT teach you. All they do is sit on their phones or laptops all block and when you ask for help they don’t know either. Seriously please make sure these people have degrees before you hire them. Had to teach myself throughout ALL levels of NCEA by watching YouTube videos as my teachers were hopeless and on multiple occasions didn’t know the answer either when I asked for help. The teachers will not listen to you, make you feel stupid for asking for help then not even help you if you do ask for help. Was struggling with mental health & all the teachers did was embarrass me infront of the whole class for being late instead of just asking why I’m late or if I’m ok. Also Mr Byurn definitely has anger issues and clearly hates kids as all he does is yell at them, he definitely needs to be fired : Made a complaint about him and was told by a teacher he also had many other complaints made against him, of course nothing was done about it though. Please don’t send your kid here unless you want them to FAIL :
you'll see a lot of negative reviews for this school but thats because its a public school. this school is good for a public school. They take good care of their kids INCLUDING those who are mentally disabled or physically disabled as they have HUGE learning spaces for these kids. do recommend. clothes are way over priced tho. Also the new principle is way to demanding.
Went to Papamoa College from Year 7 - Year 12. I left to begin working. While I was at Papamoa College it was alright. Open plan learning, Students were allowed to wear Jewellery, Coloured hair, as many Piercings as you wanted and that caused students to feel genuinely comfortable in their own skin and happy to learn. I have now heard from peers in their final year of Papamoa College that there is a new principal and all of this has been changed. I really believe that Papamoa college has lost the one thing they had going for them. Students are being stood down and threatened with suspension purely for having facial hair. If a student was to leave an existing facial piercing in or not have natural coloured hair they have been threatened with not being allowed to attend the ball or be a part of the schools play. Papamoa college was the only school in Tauranga that was flexible with their rules and I am so disappointed that they have changed that for their students who find comfort in expressing themselves through coloured hair, Piercings, Facial hair etc. I do think if your child needs extra help on learning not to send them here, Your child will be handed a book to work through with no extra help or teaching and I know its hard for people to ask for help when given a task like that. Definitely explore your options before sending your child here.
Scraps are way to common at this school I had to take both my kids out just because they had internal bleeding and three broken bones
