A solid middle of the road rating for this cafe that takes its name from the very interesting rock formations that can be found in this little west coast village. It’s a fact of life that when you don’t have competition in a market the prices go up. It’s the main gripe of people reviewing this cafe/ pizza restaurant that the prices are somewhat inflated. I guess I also see the difficulty in running a business in a remote location but yes, the cost does make your eyes water a little bit. The food is fine. We had a decent serving of carrot cake and a savoury scone which were nice enough. The table next to us had the hot cakes and they were very pleased with the quality and taste. Coffee is again, fine. One could say the best in town but that’s got a lot to do with being the only one in town lol.
Disappointed to say the least. Don't recommend at all! FOOD Being at Pancake Rocks, of course we were lured into trying out the pancakes...and what a mistake. The cheapest pancakes option was already at $27.50 and that's a complete bloody rip off. I got the streaky bacon pancake and my friend got the savory pancake but what you're actually getting are undercooked pancakes which leave a weird bad paste in your mouth as you start chewing it. It's quite starchy so there's a hint of baking soda aftertaste that we had to "wash down" with the cream/syrup. Wasn't offered any free water either so we weren't sure if we had to purchase this separately. Pretty much just ate the bacon 2 strips only and bananas, and left more than half my plate of pancakes. What an absolute waste for almost 30 bucks. Maybe their other menu items are better, but I'm honestly not coming back to even try. VIEWS If you're after the view of the actual Pancake Rocks, there's not much of it from the cafe. The Pancake Rocks are hidden behind trees/hedges where the actual entrance is, so from inside you're only really staring at the main road of Punakaiki. It wouldn't have mattered so much but it's obvious they're capitalising on their proximity to this tourist attraction, with little regard to the actual food they're serving.
Great place to relax and people watch. Plenty of space both inside and out. Delicious veggie scones! Also, very good caramel bars. At prices you’d expect for a tourist location, but worth it. I’ll be back!
Blueberry and White Chocolate Muffin is yum, but pancakes are normal and pricy. The thing that I dislike the most is they charge one dollar for a cup of hot water!!! Hot tea is 4.5 dollars and it's just enough for two cups. There's no tap water either, we have to buy expensive drinks from the vending machine...
This has to be one of the BEST cafes for breakfast on the West Coast!!!!!!! Not only was the food unbelievably delicious and presented beautifully, but the service was impeccable! Highly recommended!!!
Joke of a pizza for the price. Cheap ingredients and we could almost have quenched our thirst simply by drinking the oil off the top of it. As many have mentioned this “cafe” does not provide water. Must be the only place in the country? World?? Absolutely swindled. Owner needs to get a grip. Must be embarrassing and tough to sleep at night? Mr Crabs business mentality. Edit: I tried the chocolate they linked below and regrettably the chocolate is also one star. Unsure why this was linked by the owner. Presumably to win us back? Simply pushed us further and further away. Will be advising all to avoid.
I was hoping to be able to get pancakes here, and when we ducked our head in before visiting Pancake Rocks, the guy just said they’d be closing around 5. So we went really quickly around the path to the Rocks and came back breathless at 4:40. I immediately ordered pancakes only to be told they had stopped making pancakes for the day. If we had known that they stopped early, we’d have eaten before taking the path. So we ordered a pizza. It was very disappointing, with tough crust, meager toppings and not much flavor. What a letdown. I’m giving it one more star than I otherwise would because the woman at the counter till told us exactly where we could go to order a beer!
The Berry pancake stack was worth the cost, however more than enough for two people. Best coffee I've found on the west coast. Thanks team.
It’s a total touristic thing, really don’t bother to go there. The staff is nice, the coffee is good and the place is very pretty BUT we paid almost 40 bocks each for pancakes and coffee, so expensive for what it is. Tastes like a cheap pancake shaker/mix and just not good. The worse was that for that price you can’t even have a glass of water ! Because there is simply no tap water, it’s outrageous
A very disappointing, overpriced meal. We had to wait ages even though they weren't busy. Staff were just milling around & could see nothing to do. The pancakes were the worst I've ever had, stodgy and under cooked. They definitely rely on the fact they are the only cafe here or at least the obvious one for tourists passing thru as you'd never eat here again. Not a great advertisement for New Zealand tourism if this is the sort of cafe that takes tourists' money at one of their "must see" tourist sites.
