My experience at Palmerton North Boys' High School has been far from satisfactory. The school suffers from several critical issues that significantly impact the students' education and overall well-being. Firstly, the academic performance is inconsistent. There seems to be a lack of support for students who are struggling, leading to a wide gap in achievement levels. This is compounded by an outdated curriculum that fails to engage or prepare students adequately for the future. Behavioral issues are rampant, with bullying and absenteeism being major problems that the administration appears unable or unwilling to address effectively. The school's disciplinary measures are either too lenient or too harsh, lacking consistency and fairness. Resource constraints are glaringly obvious. The facilities are outdated, and essential educational materials are often lacking. This severely hampers the learning environment, making it difficult for both teachers and students to perform their best. Staffing is another major issue. High teacher turnover and a shortage of qualified staff mean that students frequently face disruptions in their education. Additionally, many teachers seem to lack the training necessary to handle the diverse needs of their students. Student well-being is not prioritized. Mental health support is almost non-existent, and students with special needs do not receive the attention and care they deserve. The school environment does not feel safe or inclusive, which is detrimental to the students' overall development. Parental engagement is minimal, with the school doing little to foster a strong community spirit or encourage parental involvement in their children's education. Communication between the school and parents is often poor, leaving many parents in the dark about their children's progress and issues. Technological integration is severely lacking. The school has not kept up with modern educational technology, putting students at a disadvantage compared to their peers in other schools. Access to computers and the internet is limited, and there is little effort to incorporate technology into the curriculum. The infrastructure of the school is in dire need of an upgrade. The buildings and facilities are old and poorly maintained, creating an uninspiring and sometimes unsafe environment for learning. Overall, Palmerton North Boys' High School has a long way to go in addressing these numerous issues. Until significant improvements are made, I would not recommend this school to anyone looking for a positive and effective educational experience for their child.
Excellent school, one of the main reasons we choose to live and work in Palmerston North. Great leadership, great culture, great values. If you replicated this school across NZ you would go a long way to arresting our nations social decline.
I am currently a Year 9 student at PNBHS, who thoroughly enjoys the school and all it has to offer. If you are a student wanting to excel in academics or otherwise for that matter then this is a great school, if not, perhaps look someplace else. The school and its staff are strict but it proves to achieve the school vision: "To create young men of outstanding character" that may be slightly paraphrased. With lots of hard work, effort and overall compliance with the rules and regulations this school would be a great choice!
Coming new to the school at Yr 11 my son has been made to feel very welcome and supported. He thinks all of his teachers are fantastic not what’s happened in the past and really enjoys all his subjects especially History. He feels like the boys are friendly and it’s a relief to see him so happy and engaged. Thanks PNBHS!
Great school, I am currently yr 10 at PNBHS and as long as you follow the rules life will be good there.
The original dump. No room for individuality, no real concern for students. It's all about an archaic, out of touch institution, run by some objectionable bullies. If you do speak out against the school, don't be surprised if you get a late night intimidating visit from members of the board of trustees....been there, done that. Also, no one at that school will explain why it is acceptable for certain teachers to "pressure" some boys into participating in boxing. I note Alex Anderson's rather feeble effort to defend this school.....in response, the criticism of this school is from those, like myself, who know intimately from the inside, how bad the school is .
don't like this school. Mr Sinclair is very mean and they don't listen to parents. i got expelled because i had ODD and ADHD
I saw one comments mentioned about Wendy not respect Asia student, I have the same feeling she seems not very much like Asia students not very honest from a phone talk, finally I decide to put my son in other school !
Mrs Wendy is very disrespectful and uncomfortable with international students, especially Asian students. No support for students living away from home. Very fastidious and cruel.
I highly recommended this school, thanks to it being a boys only school both my sons who graduated in 2017 are now gay adults. Thanks Palmerston Boys High
