Back in September 2015 - I was wanting to have our much loved 1988 Severn Sailboats built Fireball completely refurbished as she was showing her age in many places and we wanted to preserve this now classic boat for posterity. After asking about the trade as to exactly WHO would be best at this type of work; on an all wood boat- the name Paintcraft kept coming up from different sources. Nigel Potter the M.D of Paintcraft gave me a price over the telephone initially after I had sent him some pictures and as a result of that we agreed to go ahead. Let me say at this point that Paintcraft were the most expensive quote I had for doing the job; but they were the only boat builder prepared to put in the the time and skills required for taking the boat back to bare wood and starting again on the finish by epoxy coating decks & hull as well as of course removing and putting back all the fittings of which there are many on a Fireball dinghy. They also promised a detailed examination of the hull for potential rot and a spray paint and varnish job second to none. Nigel also operated a collection and delivery service from my home and back and we came to an arrangement on price to cover the whole job- start to finish. He also liaised with me on the telephone during the whole time of refurbishment keeping me up to date with progress and asking me whether I would like modifications and improvements to various pieces on the boat, which I thought a nice touch. He also modified my road combi trailer at the same time. The boat was at Paintcraft for the best part of 3 months in total but on delivery back to me she was totally transformed. The finish on the hull is like glass and the decks you can see your face in! The hull interior sported a new non slip floor, new toe straps and new spinnaker bags. All the fittings had been put back in their original position and work perfectly. Nigel apparently photographs all the fittings prior to removal so his team make sure everything goes back correctly! He even put new name transfers along each side of our Fireball which look very smart for " The Border Reiver". She looks now just like a brand new boat, she is that good. In conclusion if you want a really proper job done on your boat with attention to detail as a maxim- then we can thoroughly recommend Paintcraft of Nottingham and Nigel Potter himself to carry out the job on your pride and joy.
