The Pūhoro STEM Academy programme seeks to accelerate Māori student achievement in preparation for university study and eventually the workforce
Massey University's Pūhoro STEM Academy commences with a three year programme (Years 11 – 13). Students interested in a career in science and technology will be invited to apply for a position within Pūhoro.
The vision for the Academy is to: Advance Māori leadership and capability to deliver a world class science community.
Pūhoro supports existing school science delivery through provision of tutorials, mentoring and field trips. Commitment from students includes one hour per week (tutorial and mentoring) and one field trip per school term.
The Academy is a community and industry collaboration that recognises whānau as a key driver of success. Academy Navigators will work with schools, whānau, students and industry sponsors to build a local science community and facilitate exposure to the breadth of career opportunities within the science and technology sector.
The Pūhoro programme is funded by Massey University and Te Puni Kōkiri with support from the Palmerston North City Council, Te Tumu Paeroa and the New Zealand Qualifications Authority.
