Very impressive collection of artefacts, I was particularly excited by the bone room I believe it had a name, however I have forgotten. It was filled to the brim with Moa bones, midden remnants, rock tools, and other items of interest. I would definitely recommend this stop to anyone passing through.
Off chance stopover saw the township sculpture, a modern retro Waka in stainless steel. A park with wooden moa standing on guard, draw you towards the museum entrance. When entering you are greeted by the front desk staff, who are very enthusiastic and cheerful. A quick summary of the displays on offer from pre-european to modern times. Early development of native milling and farming hardship. Tribute to local archeologist who devoted his lifetime in the pursuit of moa discovery. So yes it is worthwhile spending time here.
What a treasure trove of artifacts of times gone by. There is so much history.
$10 for museum entry but the library and art gallery inside are free. There's wifi and comps for people to use freely. You can charge your devices here as well. Toilets in immaculate condition, art is beautiful and well priced. I'd highly recommend stopping in and seeing it. I personally didn't have time to check out the museum part of the place but will do on my next trip down to here. Lovely quaint town Okawa
Well I went in there thinking it's a small town how big can the museum be? Well needless to say I was surprised. The region has a very interesting history. There's logging and settlers settling. And then the midst of all this a hell of a lot of shipwrecks.
