The Otorohanga Kiwi House was home to about four kiwi birds across two dimly lit enclosures, making them a bit challenging to spot, though I was fortunate enough to find all of them. The staff were friendly and happy to assist in locating the birds. In addition to the kiwi birds, there were various aviary and gecko exhibits to explore.
What an amazing place! From the staff to the amazing animals, this is a must-see for any animal enthusiast. Andrew greeted us warmly and was the definition of friendly and informative, and his passion for animals is contagious! This was our 1st real day in New Zealand, and I can already tell it will be one of the experiences we talk about for years to come.
We loved our visit and the chance to see four actively grazing kiwis while in New Zealand! Staff was very helpful and we learned a lot from the kiwi talk. Worth stopping by if you’re in the area for Waitomo caves as it may be quieter than the bigger city’s more tourist heavy kiwi houses. The level of activity of the kiwis may be dependent on time of year and what kiwis they have at the time. If you’re worried about being disappointed it can’t hurt to ask about it at the desk before purchasing tickets. FYI no photography allowed in the kiwi exhibits so anticipate just going in and enjoying!
The staff were super friendly, and they even lent us an umbrella when it started raining. The animal areas are really well looked after, and my friends and I loved being surrounded by nature and animals. We were lucky enough to see three kiwi birds in the Night Room, and from the back, they totally looked like little green ! The souvenirs in the shop are super cheap, perfect for grabbing gifts for friends. Big thanks to the staff for all their hard work—it’s great to see the animals living freely. That’s what I love about New Zealand—people really respect life and nature. And honestly, the kiwi birds are just too cute!
To see live kiwi bird was on top of my to-do list in NZ, and my dream came true so fast while visiting this Otorohanga Kiwi House. The ticket counter staff was kind and informed us about how to go around the park and how to see the kiwi in their nocturnal houses. We were so lucky and were able to see in total of 4 kiwis in two houses! The first two came casually in our direction just in time and looked for food on the ground with their long beak, their black bead eyes shining. They were bigger than I imagined! I could spend so much time here. Later there was a Kiwi Talk session with one of the staffs, which was very helpful for getting to know this amazing being.nOther than the kiwis, there were also many other birds and lizards being kept here. The staff was kind to let us know as the Tuatara was sunbathing just where we could observe it. A small but great facility for bird and animal lovers! The souveniors were also nice, I got one of those kiwi plush which makes sounds, this is amazing.
