Story

Ormlie is the elegant former home of Gertrude Smith, built in 1899 by her wealthy father, William Nelson. With an impressive history, Ormlie offers boutique accommodation and an impressive restaurant offering modern cuisine - combining a little of Hawke's Bay's old world charm with contemporary design and modern day comfort.

As you round the sweeping drive, the Lodge offers up her inner beauty as you are led through the main entrance into the expansive hallway. You may choose to indulge in a welcoming drink or be escorted straight to your room, as might have been the case in Gertrude's day.

The Lodge offers 6 rooms, each with an en-suite and the comfort you should expect. Breakfast is served continental style – either in the privacy of your own room or select an outside space, on one of the many spectacularly sunny days Hawke's Bay is known for.

We had our wedding here in 2018 and it was great. The staff and owner we super friendly. The food was amazing. The accommodation was perfect. The ability to have reception and ceremony here was awesome too. Thank you for helping to make our wedding care free and relaxing.
The food was amazing. The room was remarkable. The whole place is beautiful. But what really deserves the 5 stars here is the customer service. Norbert and his wife are undoubtedly the best staff I've met in New Zealand.
One of the best places I have had the pleasure of staying. My fiancé and I absoloutley enjoyed our stay, the rooms were stunning the furniture, the bathroom was fantastic, everything was so so clean. The balcony with the view was great, the grounds immaculate! The service however was the best. The French lady looked after us and was more than accommodating!!
Fabulous accommodation a really luxurious stay. The host was incredibly helpful for suggestions of eating out and things to do. A real genuine warm welcome with a real homely feel. Would definitely stay again and recommend to friends.Rooms: 5/5
Wonderful food! We ordered the 5 course tasting menu, and asked if a vegan option was available. They were very accommodating, and the normal option was also very much enjoyed. Would highly reccommend. Thank you so much for the great food and service!
Everything about the location, the friendliness and helpulness of the staff makes this hotel excellent. The room was fantastic and impeccably clean. The history surrounding the building is something that i did not encounter anywhere else in NZ and very different accomodation to anywhere else I stayed during the holiday. I am so glad to have included this stay during my time away, a real highlight.
Beautiful place! Amazing building, great views from our room. And the room it's self was really nice. Food was great and the service was 5 star. We were to made to feel extremely welcome.
Mind-blowingly great! We did get overcharged by a mistake, but the owner refunded our money, even after we provided the wrong card details.... I highly recommend Ormlie Lodge as a must-do for anyone in NZ or from abroad. The food is brilliant and the quality of the rooms is exceptional. The en-suite bathrooms are amazing. The victorian-era fittings take one back to Jane Austin and Charles Dickens, while the owls hooting, pheasants calling and doves cooing make it a magical place. The owner, Anna, is a charming hostess who makes your stay extra-memorable too: nothing is too much trouble. She recommended a certain bike-hire for us that was perfect and exactly what we wanted.
We have just returned home from a lovely vacation in New Zealand the absolute highlight of which was an exceptional multi course dinner at Ormlie Lodge in the elegant and eclectic restaurant. The food, service and wines and overall experience were truly remarkable and really showed us that New Zealand is world class!
Had an exceptional few days here - the place oozes charm and the service was top notch. From the homemade bircher in the morning to the range of drinks for a nightcap - it was excellent. Lovely individualised rooms too
