The dam is used for water storage for farming irrigation and provides 7.7 MW of electricity to New Zealand's national grid. The site has been identified as an Important Bird Area by BirdLife International because it supports breeding colonies of the endangered black-billed gull.HistoryThe dam failed during construction on 6 February 1997 due to heavy rain. It was completed in 1998, creating Lake Opuha. In 2003 in order to counteract oxygen depletion in the lake an aeration system was installed.

Cool place to visit if you're into engineering. Nice lake on a nice day though.
Nice views and countryside.
Easy access . Plenty of space. Not as busy as the place at all other end of the lake
Water level was very low, weed level very high, the water was scummy and if I had caught a fish I would not eat it
Lovely spot off the beaten track, very pretty
beautiful place , scenic views to die for.....
Mint spot for smaller boats good swimming to I'd say only bad things about this place is needs more toilets round the lake and need a community pontoon with a table on that every one can use and jump off
One of the few spots near Fairlie you can visit
Amazing recreation areas here
It's a dam with impressive views. Can see fish in the water.
