The area is known for excellent conditions for gliding. Omarama Airfield is used by members of the gliding community, as well as small planes. When the weather's right, the Glider Cafe next to the airstrip is a great place to sit and watch how the gliders take flight aided by a tow plane. Once released they soar overhead and silently circle around like by birds. There are currently no regular commercial flights for passengers. Commercial gliding operations ceased early 2020. For those interested in scenic flights of the area, these are available from Twizel, Tekapo, Aoraki / Mt Cook, and Queenstown.
