The view cannot save this place. In the three weeks we have been in NZ, it was without a doubt the worst food we had. There was a limited menu and no plates or cutlery due to 'staff shortages'. No other restaurants or cafes we visited since travelling in this country seemed to have the same issue. This may be more of an issue with owners than a lacker of workers. There was a sign out the front which implied an anti vax mindset. The food was atrocious. $28 for a pizza that could have been confused for a frozen pizza. A sloppy marinara sauce with half hearted cheese. They offered no alternative milks for coffee, so good luck if you have allergies or lactose intolerance. The long black was served only 2/3 full. All in all, you'd be better off eating a plain slice of bread in the car. Dietary restrictions: Offered nothing for dietary restrictions
This is pretty much the only place open for lunch in Mt. Cook Village, so there isn't much of a choice anyways. Despite that, there weren't a lot of customers at 12:45 on a Saturday either, so there were plenty of seats. Ordered the Aoraki Mount Cook Burger with fries $29, which was okay and not outrageously overpriced. They are a bit understaffed, so there was a bit of a wait for the food to come and service is non-existent, but overall the food was decent and the place was comfortable enough.
Food is quite pricey; understandable given the location, but you'd like something tasty at least. Literally everything served is single use: cups, plates, forks etc even if you eat in. Shocking for a place with a lovely atmosphere which seems to embody being out in nature, and you'd think they'd try to not mass consume. And this is just after seeing glaciers which are receding due to climate change... lovely. Coffee from the nice woman behind the counter was great at least!
Love the great food, and people here. Thanks Charlie and team for the great food and guide for the HeliHike Food: 5/5
Dropped by for dinner. This cafe has a basic serviceable menu. I ordered a burger and it was as expected. Very straightforward food options. Something I’d keep in-mind is the kitchen literally only has one staff member preparing all of the food. So, I would advise visiting before the cafe gets busy or observing some patience when waiting for your food.
Such a disappointment. Ridiculously limited menu, no brunch options, no cabinet food and no alternative milks. I decided to still stay for a black coffee and sat in and they still gave it to me in a takeaway cup. Such environmental waste and just terrible atmosphere. Regret staying! Don't waste your time.Food: 1/5
What a disaster of a pizza... A kid could have made it look more appealing, let alone the non existent taste. You get plastic cups and paper plates, even when you dine in. And have to clear the table afterwards into not very organised bins. Avoid, if you can.Food: 1/5
We had a very straightforward but tasty steak burger; it was quiet when we visited so were served our meal promptly. It is a very basic place, with a small simple menu, but has much more charm or interest than the dinner buffet in the Hermitage hotel.Food: 4/5
Bring your own food when visiting Mount Cook. Two options in the village for dinner. We unfortunately chose pizza here at the old mountaineers cafe. Making the order we asked to have no mushroom on our pizza, we were told the pizzas are pre made so no option to make changes, ok no worries they use frozen pizza no big deal given the location, however a big price for a frozen pizza at $26, but still happy to support the local village economy. The pizza came out pretty quickly, ok cool. Yes COOL it was, undercooked in fact. So we took the pizza back and asked if they could cook it longer. Back to our lodge for a second time and it was still CLEARLY undercooked. PSA undercooked frozen pizza harbours germs in the flour if eaten you could become sick or even die from consuming. When we took the pizza back the second time and asked for a refund as it was not safe to consume, the girl assured it was cooked but maybe not cooked to our liking. Please, if the girl working there reads this review, just do a simple google search of how to visually tell if a frozen pizza is cooked for safe consumption. Management please take this review seriously for constructive criticism, so you don’t cause anyone to become unwell. Staff shortages are no excuse for serving unsafe food. When a frozen pizza is served with the cheese not melted on top, soggy in the centre and the bottom is pale, it is clearly not cooked, therefore unsafe for consumption.
I did grab a coffee here, but they only have standard milk. The atmosphere was great though, views, couches, fireplace and small gift shop area. The menu of burgers and pizzas looks good for another time.Food: 3/5
