Food was very tasty! Easy to follow menu, staff were helpful when we couldn’t decide and their recommendations were great. Love how you can sit at the counter and watch the food being prepared. Very cool music that suited the ambience. The only problem is trying to find a park close enough to Ponsonby Central!
Yummy pork belly Arepas and platter for 2. We love the cassava chips!!! Edit: came back today, this time with hubby. Incredible food as always. I wish Arepas could be cheaper 15 so we could order 1 each and can have more!
Okay food, but overpriced for what it is. Ambiance is pretty loud with some shocking quality Logitech speakers from the early 2000s. Service was also okay although seemed very short on staff while we were there. Menu was good at accomodating for gluten free and coeliac options although some sauces were gluten containing so definitely double check. Overall an okay experience, I would go back again but probably not in a hurry.
Really delicious food! Really liked the arepa itself and the filling topped with some of their chimichurri was delicious. The dulce dessert was nicely balanced with the cream and overall really good. Will definitely come back to try some different other dishes on the menu!
I didn’t know what an Arepa was - and I was missing out! Maize flatbreads filled to bursting with meats, plantains, avocados, beans and all kinds of tastebud titillating salsas. They are Colombian & Venezuelan in origin and the vibrant Latin flavours are earth shattering It’s a great spot for a quick bite or date night - located within Ponsonby’s hip little back-alley food row. You’ll pay $23 for the one pictured but it is very filling and an experience not to be missed. The lads serving are great too - proper South American banter and relaxed vibes.
I had 2 arepas and 2 plates with deep fried platano by my self. I loved it sooo much. So tasty and refreshing. Definitely a place to try out.
This is VERY authentic Venezuelan Arepas! My wife is Venezuelan and these are the most authentic Arepas you can eat in New Zealand. It's a regular visit for us as the food is exceptional. The service always great and the prices are very resonable. If you want to try the most Authentic Arepas on the menu, have the pabellón or Reina. This is what Venezuelans eat for Breakfast lunch and Dinner haha. Also try the Casava fries! And if you still have room at the end, try the "Tres leches" cake! Its also a very popular desert in Venezuela and prob my favorite thing on planet earth! If I could I would give Olas Arepas a 10 star!
I highly recommend this place! I wanted to add a couple of pictures of what I got but not sure how to, I got the pork one and my partner got chicken. Both of them were amazing, freshly made and the sauces are to die for. I could drink the whole sauce. The “hot” sauce wasn’t too hot though but that’s just me I eat a lot of spicy food but it did have a tiny bite. Overall a great place and I’d go to it again!! Try their food.
We’ve been here several times now and feel it’s time. This review needed writing, because this may be the best Mexican food in the city. Arepas are better than burritos, hands down. There’s no rice filler or sauce from the bottle, it’s just home made filling in a delicious hand made corn meal flat bun. We recommend the pork belly. It melts in your mouth, and has just the balance of sweet and spicy. The fried plantain and fresh salsa make it an easy favourite. As a delicious meat free side, the tostones are well worth it and not something you find done well at the few Mexican places that offer them. The corn chips are perfectly fried and the slaw is fresh in the way only good Mexican food is. Olas Arepas nails it. 10/10, will eat again.
Olas Arepas makes some incredible food! Everything I've had there has been amazing so far, perfectly cooked and seasoned meats balanced with some amazing vegetables! Definitely give Olas a try.
