Whakatane Airport is an airport serving the town of Whakatane and surrounding tourist attractions (Mount Tarawera, White Island) in New Zealand. Air Chathams operates daily flights to Auckland with a Metroliner III and a DC-3 Dakota. Sunair also provides flights to Hamilton and Gisborne with a Piper Aztec.The airport also houses a flight school, agricultural aircraft and commercial helicopter operations.The "excitingly different" terminal building was designed by Roger Walker and completed in 1974.

Great little regional hub for Air Chathams, connecting with Auckland, and a superlative little early 1970s playful design by Kiwi architect Roger Walker. The wee observation patio, up the central spiral stairs, is a hidden gem if only there were more planes!
When I first arrived in Whakatane, I was taken a back by the size of the Airport and Air Chatham plane. It is small but oh so superior to the bigger Airports I have been through. Everyone is helpful, smiley and so friendly. Clean toliets, comfortable waiting area with ample charging ports and air con. Upon arrival a lovely local gentleman by the name of Aaron offered me a ride to my motel instead of ordering a taxi. I bumped into him again today as I head back to Auckland en route to Sydney. The lovely ladies at Air Chathams check in counters are ever so helpful and such beautiful souls. A testament to all the lovely locals I met during my stay. I will be back again, but this time with my husband! Tena koutou katoa mo to manaakitanga i tenei ra whakata!
Small but fully functional airport. Only one airline operates with limited flight options. Could be 5 star if had more flight options.
This is a great airport to travel too or from. Easy access. Heap's of free parking. I love it.
Great regional airport. Supporting local. Rarely closed for bad weather.
Considering the national carrier pulled out of here a few years back,it's amazing the support Air Chatham gets for a smaller carrier. It still travels to Auckland not to sure,if once or twice a week. It's architecture is as zany from the inside to the outside. Has that"won't forget me charm". Has basic amenities,and a cafe.Would be cool if they would get free Wi-Fi, when waiting for your flight or picking people up. Best thing is no in your face security,that's rural for you.
This is a small, but functional airport. It has great views of the apron from inside and outside. No security and a quick check in; definitely 5 stars!
If you're an aviator NZWK Whakatane Airfield is a great airfield to visit. As at writing this post landing fees for GA general aviation was zero - you don't hear this very often! Looked like there were two fuel bowsers too. We flew in Saturday lunchtime and was surprised to see the cafe area closed, even though an Air Chathams flight was due in within 20 minutes. Great little airport in a beautiful part of the Bay of Plenty, New Zealand.
