Page of Monina Hernandez, Filipino nurse leader & public health advocate. Monina pushes for solutions to issues that matter to patients & their families.
I am an experienced nurse-midwife, educator, author and leader with a career that spans more than 24 years in two countries. I have been a member of NZNO since 2010, the year I became a registered nurse in New Zealand. I have been actively participating in the Greater Auckland Region (GAR) NZNO Infection Prevention and Control (IP and C) College activities since 2013 when I took on the role of infection prevention and control CNS at Counties Manukau District Health Board; and currently with the GAR. With this, I was given a Regional Service Award (GAR) in 2016 by the NZNO.
I helped bring together Filipino nurses across New Zealand through the founding of the Filipino Nurses Association of New Zealand, Incorporated (FNANZ) where I am the President. I am currently a lecturer at the School Nursing of Massey University.
My involvement with nursing and unions transcend two countries and span more than two decades. I have taken on various roles in nursing practice, research and education. As I transitioned into different roles, I brought with me my advocacy for equitable health service for people and a just wage for workers. My roles may have changed, but my passion stayed the same, i.e., dignity for all, social justice and democracy through collective action. I am committed to patient safety, quality care and evidence-based practice. All these are in keeping with NZNO’s vision and commitment to the representation of members and the improvement of the health status of all people in Aotearoa.
