NOSLaM (North Otago Sustainable Land Management) is a group driven by farmers keen to improve water quality and promote good pastoral management.
Our Vision:
To create collaborative community catchment groups that harness
common goals for land, water and social resources, embrace individual
responsibility and leadership and collectively enhance the North Otago region.
Our Mission:
To coordinate and facilitate effective, engaging collaboration between
farmers, industry stakeholders and community groups for the common
good of sustainable land practices and water quality.
To encourage and support the formation of farmer-led catchment ‘Pod’ groups that are actively seeking relevant, tangible, science-based knowledge of how land and water management practices may influence
the status of water quality in their sub-catchment.
To ensure water quality trends are clearly defined in specific, quantifiable metrics and results are shared on a collaborative basis, in a timely manner and that these are followed up with the relevant catchment focused scientific advice.
To develop and maintain a strong focus throughout North Otago of linking economic viability and the benefits to environmentally secure land management practices to ensure sustainability for both current and future generations.
To encourage and develop a culture of ‘individual accountability that leads to making a collective difference’ throughout rural North Otago with all facets of the community playing a role and understanding others’ perspectives.
To ensure efficient use of levy, rate payer and industry funds by removing duplication and under-utilisation of resources while providing farmers and the community with the knowledge that they are seeking thus returning better outcomes for all.
NOSLaM (North Otago Sustainable Land Management) is a group driven by farmers keen to improve water quality and promote good pastoral management. The farmers wish to take a proactive leadership role in managing waterways, such as the Kakanui River, to ensure that a holistic approach is taken, encompassing the environmental, economic and social wellbeing of the wider community.
NOSLaM members work together to develop a platform that will encourage and engage all farmers within North Otago to work collaboratively and collectively toward meeting the regulated water quality standard requirements that come into effect in 2020.
Today NOSLaM is actively involved throughout North Otago including the Awamoko, Waiareka and Kakanui Catchment areas - with groups of farmers (known as ‘Pods’) working together to identify and implement improved, smarter land and water management techniques.
