Story

Nightcaps is a town in the Southland Region of New Zealand's South Island. According to the 2013 New Zealand Census of Population and Dwellings, its population is 294, consisting of 165 males and 132 females. This represents a decline of 15 people since the 2006 census. State Highway 96 passes through Nightcaps as it runs between Ohai and Winton. The town has a golf course and two primary schools that cater to students from Nightcaps, the surrounding rural area, and since the 2003 closure of its own school, Ohai.It has a community website, designed to give information to all new and existing members of the surrounding community. TAKITIMU ONLINENightcaps has a more industrial history than most Southland towns due to nearby coal deposits. A private railway was built from the terminus of the New Zealand Railways Department's Wairio Branch to Nightcaps to provide more efficient transport of coal; operated by the Nightcaps Coal Company, it opened not long after the state's railway reached Wairio in 1909. In 1918, a proposal was made to build another line to coal interests around Ohai, and the construction of this line was fiercely opposed by the Nightcaps Coal Company, fearing a loss of business. However, construction was approved in July 1919 with a deviation through Morley Village, considered part of Nightcaps. The first section of the line, including the part serving Morley Village, opened on 1 September 1920. Ohai was reached four years later, and in 1925, the Nightcaps Coal Company ceased to operate; they handed over their railway line to the Railways Department, who dismantled it in 1926 as the Ohai line was capable of catering for traffic from Nightcaps. The Ohai line continues to operate, primarily for the carriage of coal, and it is one of the few remaining rural branch lines out of many that once existed throughout New Zealand. It has been part of the national rail network since 1 June 1990.

The greatest thing about Nightcaps is the staff. I have been to many similar spots wherein the bartenders and other staff seem as if they have no respect or value in a new patron. Nightcaps makes all feel welcome and that goes miles with me. The food is also very well prepared and sunday’s bloody mary bar is on point! The parking is easy: behind the building or on Devine Street. Lastly, there is a pool table and a couple video games I love “Find the Difference”
I CAN'T believe I've lived in COLUMBIA for close to 3 YEARS, and I've been to Nightcaps several times to play pool, and just enjoy a "Nightcap!" BUT.... THERE'S A HIDDEN GEM IN THIS JOINT... BEST MOZZARELLA CHEESE STIX EVA!!! I've been missing out for YEARS, and JUST FOUND THE GREATEST OF THE GREAT FRIED MOZZARELLA, since Max n Erma's left the south!! Out of ALL Places... AT NIGHTCAPS, a laid back, chill environment, serves ALL kinds of food until 1am....THAT IS HARD TO FIND NOWADAYS! The staff is Awesome, prices are affordable.. BUT most of ALL it's a "Hometown Feel" that you will definitely want to continue to run to! I can't wait until I get over my Fried Cheese addiction, so I can devour into ALL of the other Great options on their menu!! Thanks Nightcaps, You have a New Fan in Me!!
We needed somewhere to eat late. The food was surprisingly good. The bartenders were friendly and efficient despite being very busy. It’s definitely a bar — busy and loud on a Friday, which isn’t a knock, it’s just what it is. Columbia doesn’t have a lot of late night food options so this gave us what we needed. The mozzarella sticks were amazing, as were the spring rolls. I might make this a to go lunch option.
Great simple neighborhood bar pub for affordable tasty small meal and drinks with pool , juke box, patio deck available for a good vibe.Food: 5/5
Just a classy corner bar. Everyone I encountered working here was very welcoming and helpful to out of towners. They have freshly prepared food options, not just a drop in a deep fryer. Place does open up a lot earlier on game day than they have listed. Call to check their hours.
Nightcaps is the best bar in Columbia by far, but don’t let the secret out. The food is exceptional especially the pizzas and mozzarella sticks, the staff is incredibly friendly, and the vibes are always spectacular. I’ve been a regular patron for about 2 years and this place has truly become my home away from home.
Cute little chill spot bar. I was only there for about 45 mins. Then the owner started yelling, "Pay Your Tab, time to Go!" LOL. . He meant that.
i absolutely love this place. the staff are so friendly and great at what they do. the food is awesome as well!
Pleasantly surprised on how delicious their pizza is. Cheese sticks and egg rolls are good too.
Bartender with the dreads is a trashy individual who swore at me for asking a question. Not my fault she’s a failure at life.Service: 1/5
