The best & the only authentic Mexican food in Nelson was extremely scrumptious, however you may have to re order your mains because of the portion size. Loved the vibe of the restaurant. Definitely looking forward for our next visit!
Cute atmosphere and good drinks, but the food itself is pretty underwhelming. I feel people just think it's good because there aren't any other Mexican restaurants in Nelson to compare it to... Re-reviewing after a recent re-visit: It started off poorly where we were asked to come 15mins later as they had overbooked. A friend also mentioned how they were asked to come an hour earlier that week as "it was a quiet night". When we arrived the waitress refused to let us order entrees before mains - when we asked why, she said "I don't know". When the food came out they then missed one persons order all together and didn't even apologize. Finally when their order arrived, the male server had a mouthful of food while he was delivering the food. Overall, the food other than the twice-cooked chips was incredibly underwhelming and overpriced and the service was super unprofessional.
Such lovely decor and a really chill vibe. We enjoyed the margaritas at $18 a piece. The cerviche was excellent $24, although I would have liked more of it for the price, as we're the small tacos at $10 each - esp the fish taco yum! The coconut flan was delicious but I only remembered to photograph it when almost gone! The churros were a little over cooked, but still tasty. Would definitely return as the service was also friendly and fast.
We enjoyed our meals here. We were squeezed in on a really busy Friday night in a cozy corner. Service was prompt with mocktails and a nice big good value glass of Shiraz ordered. Our guacamole starter was unexciting but all of our mains were really good, especially my seafood burrito. Our mains took a while to come as we got in just after a large table but they were worth the wait. Great atmosphere here, it is usually busy and reservations are essential
Disappointment began when I saw that the ponytail palms from out front weren't there anymore... That was its best feature. They were the second worst nachos I ever had. That cheese has no place on nachos. Too many toppings for the chips. And the chips... The waiters should lick the chips to stick salt on them because they're so bland. The lighting is lovely though and the waiter was nice. It used to be the only Mexican food in Nelson, overpriced and underwhelming. Now it is the worst Mexican food in Nelson, but I'm bummed I have to travel all the way to Richmond.
Way below average food, service and staff attitude. Spend your money at any other Nelson bar/restaurant because at least those establishments are owned and run by locals who genuinely love what they do, love sharing their talent/passion and really embrace welcoming people into that passion. Nicola's Cantina delivers the exact opposite! Was part of a big group celebrating a birthday, which should be a happy time. However, the wait staff and owner overshadowed the celebration with their bad attitudes, blaming their mistakes and miscommunications on our group. Tried to bill us for things we didn't order. Gas lit us by telling us we'd ordered food and drinks we didn't and then got shirty with us when we said we wouldn't pay for it. Spoke to us abruptly and made us feel rushed all eve. And then sprung on us just after we'd sung Happy Birthday and blew out the candles that we had to exit the table in 15mins despite being told we'd have it all night!! Bad attitudes aside, the menu seems bountiful at a glance, but the flavours are bland, the quality of the ingredients don't match the price expectation, and it's a bit of a stretch calling the cuisine Mexican. But to end on a positive note/constructive criticism, the decor is the only good thing going about Nicola's Cantina in Nelson until they learn to love what they do, bring that passion to their guests and provide a hospitable service where you feel valued rather than a nuisance.
Appalling service. Booked a large table to celebrate my birthday, initially had to accommodate to an earlier time due to another large booking which was fine but was told by the owner we would have the table for as long as we would like. Service the whole night was awful, very rude and blamed their mistakes with the food on us trying to bill us for extra things that weren’t brought to the table. After having the meal and one drink because they never came back to do more drink orders we were told we had 15 minutes before we had to leave after originally being told there was no time restriction for the booking. Food was average, edible but nothing spectacular. Very disappointed and everyone at the dinner continued to talk about how disgusting the attitude of the waitress was. Will not ever recommend this place or go again.
I've patronised Nicola's Cantina multiple times over the years - including my own birthday more than once - and always joked that the tastiness of the food was inversely correlated to how bad the service was. Both things have got worse since I started going, and with the food now being below average while the service borders on aggressive I won't be going back. My empanadas were underseasoned and hard, my cevice tasted less than fresh, and the churros were stodgy and heavy with an almost burned exterior. I can't give an update on how the drinks are, as once one order was taken we weren't asked again for an order. They tried to make us pay for items we hadn't ordered and that had been brought out by the waitress in error. When my friend who was unluckily the last person to pay queried the outstanding items the owner instructed the waitress to 'take her eftpos card', as though we were trying to run out without settling up. There are many other options for restaurants in Nelson, take your business elsewhere.
Went for dinner with a big group, it was very hot and the owner wouldn't let us open the door for air flow. Service was average no follow up with drinks etc. Food was fresh and tasty. Overall was OK but owner was rude and that doest make for a good environment.
Chicken burrito was OK but dry. Needed guacamole or even sourcream. It was incredibly hot in there and the owner wouldn't let us open the door for some airflow. Very strange lady, it was like she took pleasure in her customers feeling uncomfortable. Felt sorry for the staff as anyone could see they were not happy working for such a control freak. Wouldn't go back ever!
