Our History - recalled by Michael Ferguson
In 1977/78 Whangarei County Council purchased land from Ted Amos consisting of a pig paddock and hill (now cared for by local enthusiasts). The first Committee was formed in 1979 under Dick Churcher and control of the land was handed over from WCC. The flat area was raised approx 1m by Bill Flower Contractors (at no cost apart from some diesel) and soil was moved from the top of the hill behind where #5 tee is today.
The following year the Rugby Club built what’s known as the Tractor shed. The field was played on but proved to be very wet and three years later core drainage was installed which included the old soccer field, now #1 fairway.
Mike Ferguson became President in 1983 and along with a strong Committee began fundraising in earnest. Under Gordon Addis’ guidance with Lion Club support a Casino evening was held in Whangarei, raising $25,000. Two more followed raising a further $24,500. Fundraising continued with Race nights, socials and different activities.
By early 1984 funds were enough to build. Plans were drawn, permits gained and tenders called. Bob Johnson (member at the time) was awarded the Contract at a very competitive price. With a grant from WCC Stage One was built to include the main hall, kitchen, bar, chillers, toilets, showers and changing room and ended where the concertina door is today.
In 1990 Stage Two saw the addition of the Lounge/Dining room, passage on the eastern side, sports kitchen and store room (then used as the bowling office). These foundations provided for another story to be added and lift installed at a future stage. During these alterations the bar was moved to its current position and the showers sealed over as Rugby had folded and were no longer being utilised. Stage Three was added in 1998 to include current restaurant kitchen, golf room and toilets.
Without the enthusiasm and foresight of past Committees, we would not exist. Thank you to all involved over the years.
