Nga Manu Nature Reserve

About

Discover "A Real KIWI Nature Experience" on the Kapiti Coast, within easy reach of Wellington. A diverse range of native birds & over 700 plant species.

Story

Nga Manu Nature Reserve offers you a unique opportunity to have a hands-on experience with nature. It is a ‘must see’ attraction for all local families and tourists visiting the Wellington region.

There are 13 hectares for you to explore, including the largest remnant of original lowland coastal swamp forest on the stunning Kapiti Coast. The animal life at Nga Manu is a mix of both wild and enclosed species. Get up close to the iconic New Zealand Kiwi in the Nocturnal house and discover New Zealand’s unique prehistoric reptile- the Tuatara. Meet the friendly Kea, Tui, Fantail, Kereru and Kaka. Over 56 different bird species come and go around the wetlands, bush and surroundings.

All pathways are easily walked and there's seating and picnic spots throughout the reserve. All facilities are designed for wheelchair and pushchair access and family enjoyment is well catered for. Our Birds are fed at 11am daily so this is a great time to observe the kiwi. Attend the Whio feeding talk at 12:30pm and take part in our Eel Feeding at 2pm daily. On summer weekends and public holidays you can go on a tour of the forest at 2:15pm.

Nga Manu has overnight accommodation (for up to 4 adults) available in the Reserve - bookings are essential. http://ngamanu.co.nz/functions-accommodation/stay-the-night-theos-cottage/

The Nga Manu Function Centre is the perfect venue for your event, celebration or wedding. Group packages and education packages are available and we are also a great venue for corporate team building.

What a beautiful, serene place to spend a day. Beautifully maintained. Easy walking for all ages. Fantastic picnic areas with a bonus bbq. Staff are cheerful & helpful.
Awesome place we took the bird feeding tour and we all enjoyed the bird interaction and the info from the guide was interesting.. things you just dont know.. kids loved it feeding ducks and a lookout which overlooks the reserve and cool bush walk..keas and blue ducks and kereru.. photos next time for sure.. highly recommend a visit
Wonderful midweek morning spent at Ngā Manu with my son. Easy to navigate with a buggy, plenty of green space for picnicking & the ducks were a treat to watch for my babe. Worth multiple visits.
Great place to visit, go for a walk, see the kiwi, tuatara and all sorts of other bird life. Plenty of parking and super friendly staff.
A really awesome spot and well worth the tiny entry price. It's a nice easy walk and birds of so many species are easy to spot outside of the displays
What a wonderful place! Easy access for the disabled with lovely surrounds. The boys really loved watching the eels being fed & trying to spot the geckos. The nocturnal exhibit was marvellous & we really enjoyed our picnic amongst the ducks & their gorgeous pond. Highly recommended
