NZU's objectives are to benefit New Zealand rugby by strengthening the overall performance of university/student rugby, to broaden participation at all levels in university/student rugby throughout New Zealand, to maintain and enhance the special nature of university/student rugby in New Zealand and to be the New Zealand rugby connection in the Asian region.

The Council is based in Wellington, with meetings of the Council being called from time to time. The Council will, in accordance with its constitution have representatives from all constituent Clubs, the NZRFU, and University Sports NZ. The Council’s structure also includes a Patron (ex-All Black, David Kirk), a President (Roger Drummond), a Treasurer and a Secretary
