Amazing place, such a broad range of classic cars. Absolutely loved ‘the cat cage’ - an incredible array of classic jaguars. Each car has a sign board telling you lots of interesting facts about the model and its manufacturer. Great value for money too.
Visited the Nelson classic car museum as a part of our cycle journeys tour. There’s bike parking at the side of the building. The collection of cars/vehicles on display was amazing , two whole separate buildings. Whether you’re a car enthusiast or not. There’s a few cool cars on site that you can sit in & take a photo wish I’d realized before I went in as we only saw the sign on the last line of cars on the way outCafe at the site & large gift shop, toilets near gift shop. Highly recommended.
This is a classic place I almost missed — and yet, once you step inside, you can’t help but feel it:nthe glory of a former empire has quietly returned.nNelson Classic Car Museum is not a place reserved only for car enthusiasts. Even if you’re not familiar with engines, specifications, or production years, the lines, materials, and presence of these vehicles are enough to leave a deep impression. And if you do know cars, this museum feels less like a visit and more like a quiet, reverent pilgrimage.nSeen from today’s perspective, the contrast is even more striking. Modern cars have become increasingly homogenized, especially with the rise of electric vehicles — different brands often feel distinguishable only by their badges. Standing in front of these historic automobiles, you can’t help but admire an era when even the emblems were works of art, let alone the vehicles themselves, each boldly and confidently expressing its own identity.nWhen you notice the hand-cranked engines, rear-view mirrors strapped to spare tyres, and headlights that required candles or fuel, a deeper realization sets in. You begin to understand that today’s highly intelligent, technologically advanced cars are far from a given. They are the result of a century-long evolution, shaped by craftsmanship, experimentation, and human ingenuity.nThe newly opened second exhibition hall is particularly impressive. Here, cars are no longer displayed in isolation but placed within their historical context. Through carefully reconstructed scenes, lighting, and atmosphere, time seems to rewind. Walking through the space feels less like visiting a museum and more like traveling through a century of history.nYet beneath the beauty lies a quiet sense of realism. These cars, spanning more than a hundred years, speak of imperial glory — but history is rarely gentle. New Zealand was born of the British Empire, and many famous car brands also originated in the UK. Today, however, most no longer belong to Britain. Like the late Queen herself, they have become part of history — either legends, or the memory of legends.nThat is what makes this museum truly powerful. It doesn’t only celebrate greatness; it reminds us that greatness is never permanent.nIf you pass through Nelson, don’t miss this place — it lingers long after you leave.
Awesome. Classy and timeless. $20 entry for adults. It’s like a place you could imagine driving down a highway in. You can even take pictures in some of the cars.nLots of beautiful cars that I’m sure have some great stories and memories in them. Most cars have cool facts about them so you can teach the kids. Beautiful place.
World class car museum. My husband knows these things and told me so! I loved it, they put 1000% effort into the entire experience and would go again and recommend to any visitors to Nelson.
