Neighbourhood Support Waimea aims to create Safe & Friendly Neighbourhoods in the Richmond/Waimea Region
Neighbourhood Support Waimea has been around since the late 80's. Since the employment of a part-time coordinator in November 2012 it has grown from 50 active groups to 111 groups now. Having these street groups set up encourages residents to reconnect with their neighbourhood and to look out for people that may be in a more vulnerable then themselves.
The groups help members by looking after each other home if they are away by collecting the mail to various other things.
We assist the groups to develop a street contact list of their group so they can keep in touch and call on each other.
As a coordinator my role is to get information to the groups either on what crime may be happening on a weekly to fortnightly basis by emailing Crime Alerts to their Street Contact who in turn will pass onto the members. A Newsletter is also sent by email to each group on a 3 monthly basis and by post on a 6 monthly basis.
Each Neighbourhood Support Group decides how it wants to operate. Some groups hold regular social get-togethers such as a BBQ's and Street Picnic's
Other groups may just want to be a part of the group without having to do anything extra and that is also fine
To set up a group; we can guide you in the right direction, their may be a group already in your street, if not we can send out letters to that street to organise a one off meeting.
Its free and very worthwhile
Our Office is at Richmond District Police Station and our hours are Monday & Tuesday; emails are checked daily.
