Run by volunteers the Museum of Waiheke and Historic Village provides a glimpse into Waiheke's history. The Museum benefits the Waiheke Community by recording, preserving and furthering the appreciation of its history.
Experience a slice of Old Waiheke at the Waiheke Museum and Historic Village.
The Waiheke Island Historical Society was first established in 1972 and the Museum of Waiheke and Historic Village (its operating organisation) was gifted, in 1987, the old woolshed. A village complex was planned around it and the 1990s saw three buildings (Champion Cottage, Keane Cottage and Day Cottage) join the now refurbished woolshed.
The Waiheke Museum and Historic Village was officially opened by Sandra Lee on 31 December 1990 and quickly became known informally as "The Museum".
The Historic Village expanded again in April 1997 when Keane Cottage was moved from Oue Street, Oneroa.
