Mt Brown hut

About

Built by the community, this is the West Coast’s most accessible alpine hut. It is a steep climb up from Lake Kaniere, Hokitika (about 4 hours) but the views are fantastic. See the photo albums for details about the hut build & our fantastic sponsors.

Story

It takes about four hours of stiff climbing to get to Mt Brown Hut. The main track to Mt Brown Hut starts at Geologist Creek near Lake Kaniere. From the carpark the track travels through the bush before crossing a small creek. Another 20 mins takes you to the bottom of a steep spur which the track climbs up, with some sections being very steep. The forest changes as you gain altitude until, finally, you break out into tussock. From here it is about 15 minutes to the hut.
Volunteers have also cleared a track from Mt Brown Hut down to the Styx river, making a loop trip possible although this track is longer and more adventurous. This marked route mostly follows a ridge and is very steep in places but passes through some lovely forest. The track joins the main Styx Valley track beside a stream and another 10 minutes takes you to the start of the 4WD track to the road. It is about 3 kms from the Styx track carpark to the Geologist Creek carpark.
Have a great trip!

2-4 hours of arduous tree root climbing. Steep but tracked out. Not as commercial as other Hutt routes, simply beautiful! The Hutt has a burner and 4 bunks with a long drop toilet.
The track is muddy and occasionally unclear, but the views from the top are worth it. This can easily be a day walk if you don't feel like staying overnight, too.
Steep clamber to the tops but through very attractive forest and fabulous West Coast scenery awaits those who persevere.
Amazing reward at the top. Definitely worth it staying at the hut for sunset/sunrise
Steep & muddy but view is well worth the effort
Hard way up, but hut is lovely
Great hut with decent a toilet only 20 meters down the hill. Also has enough flat ground in vicinity to comfortably sleep in the tent in case the hut is full.
Mount Brown hike is great but very steep and muddy hike through the rainforest. The hike is maybe too muddy and unmanageable after heavy rain. If you fit enough you can reach the top in about 2,5 - 3 hours. Way back takes about half the time. Otherwise staying overnight at Mount Brown hut is possible, a nice experience as well. The little orange Mt Brown hut is adorable and very comfortable with small fireplace in the centre. There are 4 beds, first come, first serve. Totally recommend and worth all the afford.
Stunning but it is a slog.....take water
Iconic hut. Grunty walk up.. We cheated with a kerosene taxi!
