Story

Mount Maunganui, or Mauao, commonly known by locals as The Mount, is an extinct volcanic cone at the end of a peninsula and the town of Mount Maunganui, by the eastern entrance to the Tauranga Harbour in New Zealand. It is considered very important and tapu (sacred) by the local Māori iwi, featuring extensively in local mythology. It is also of significant historical value. The summit is 232 metres above sea level. In recent years there have been several fires on the mountain, in turn triggering a number of replanting efforts. Since Mount Maunganui has been open to the general public it has become a popular location for many activities including scenic walks, jogging and even hang gliding.

I have walked up the Mount before but this most recent time was even better - I really recommend walking up for sunrise. You get amazing views and even better you don't get as hot with the walk. The way up with the stairs is quite steep though so give yourself time for stops to admire the view.
Lovely place to spend a morning or afternoon walking, trekking or hiking depending on which route you choose to take. There's no toilets or rest-stops though so make sure to plan in advance and bring a bottle of water and snacks with you just in case. Also, if you get to the section that gives you multiple options for alternate routes to the summit and it points into a trail that's covered by bushes and trees - don't take that route! It's overgrown and there's no clear path to follow which means you can easily get lost. Don't risk it!
Mount Maunganui in Tauranga Visited on 29/1/2019 Mount Maunganui is also known by the Maori as Mauao. It is a large lava dome formed two to three million years ago. Do not be deceived by the name "Mount Maunganui". It is nothing more than just a low hill of 232 metres. We walk along the Salisbury Wharf / Pilot Bay side, following the board walk. My wife and I take the easier Base Track, while our friends decide to walk up to the summit by the Summit Track. Although the latter is a shorter track, it demands more stamina to walk up the slope. From the track, we can catch a good view of the picturesque Pilot Bay, and some ships sailing pass. It is a hot day, and we finish drinking the water we take along before we complete our walk. The ending point is on the different side of the peninsula. We are surprised that our friends arrive at the foothill 20 minutes later than us. We meet at the information centre, and cool ourselves down in air-conditioned comfort. What a relief! Toilets facilities are available near the 8nfirmation centre.
Short hike for the most amazing panoramic views of the whole bay. We spent several hours at the top enjoying the views. A must if you’re in the area.
Went up there last weekend as we were visiting town. Lovely 30 minute walk to the Summit which rewards you with an epic view over the town, harbour and ocean. Highly recommend doing it when you’re in the area.
Amazing beautiful place, always busy, so lookout for parking, good coffee and alot of options to eat, many hotels and restaurants. Loved the walk in the mount.
An absolute must-do for anyone wanting to truly experience Tauranga. It's great to see so many locals and tourists make use of such a stunning track. Each time you look out at the view when climbing, you see something amazing and different. I love how there are different tracks you can walk.
We love this area! The town, restaurants and shopping are great. The beaches are beautiful and wide, and there are wonderful hiking trails around the base of the mountain, and up to the top. Take the time to make the short but sometimes a little steep climb to the top to enjoy the views!
Good level of fitness required to walk to the summit but well worth it! Offers stunning views over the western bay of plenty.
Beautiful, short walk to the peak of Mount Maunganui! Street parking is available for free around the area, you might have to come early or get lucky to get a spot. The walk itself is pretty short, about 45 minutes to get to the top and much less to get down. The views are fantastic and you get to see some nice graffiti and cute sheep along the way. The view of the city and the bay is beautiful and totally worth a few pictures when you get to the top. Not a very crowded trail but we did see a couple of running groups pass us.
