I totally recommend visiting the Rangitoto summit! Absolutely worth the effort, but you'll need to spend a day here to get to the summit. So catch the 9.15am Fuller's ferry from Princes Wharf to Rangitoto, or preferrably, the Explorer ferry from America's Cup village, Auckland Viaduct to Home Bay, Motutapu. You'll have to check with Explorer for their timetable. You also need to buy a return ticket, as there's no ticket outlet on Motutapu, and wifi / data is not readily available on either island. The Explorer is in partnership with local iwi, Ngai Tai ki Tamaki, so you'll get to hear a bit about our local Maori from a Maori perspective! Ka pai! If you prefer to swim, there's Home Bay, Islington Bay wharf, and Station Bay. Everywhere else is too rough, or shared with the Motutapu Camp. There's no shops here, so make sure you bring your cut lunch and 1 litre+ drink bottle, or you'll starve and dehydrate! Wear wet weather gears in winter, and good quality boots or shoes throughout the year for trekking across from Rangitoto to Motutapu. Remember that not all of the beaches have a toilet block, so go before you leave Rangitoto wharf or Home Bay motorcamp on Motutapu. Planting out days for this mega beautiful island are coming up: 16.07.22 and 14.08.22 and there's another one around mid-September too.
Boring little island. Really not much to see and to do. Perhaps a temporary run away from urban? Thanks to Jacinda Ardern who gave us a free voucher to come here
I will visit again, it’s a beautiful island with lots of beautiful birds, it’s well maintained. We stayed in the cottage which was very clean and had a lovely view. We had a warm welcome from Kim and Duncan. They both were very friendly, lovely people and made sure to check up on us multiple times to ensure we are enjoying our stay. The educational activities were great for both adults and our kids, the instructors were awesome too. Fully recommend it.
Awesome way to spend one, or a couple of days. Visit the historic Gun emplacement. Go inside the bunkers. You can even camp there in Home Bay. Just be mindful of any potential pests on your boat, as there is some very rear birds.
Love the place and would recommend it to all who haven't been there yet. It is a historical island full of beauty.
Really enjoyed walking along the trails and water edge for this island. Beautiful water and large swaths of farmland that are mostly empty although you’ll catch a glimpse of some sheep if you get lucky. Walked from Rangitoto island to Home Bay where I found a large amount of people camping along the water’s edge as well as many boats anchored in the bay.
This place is not for everyone. If you like to walk in a beautiful serene view, or to relax and let nature to pamper your mind, this is the place.
Motutapu is fortunately relatively unknown but offers a far better experience compared to nearby Rangitoto. Is worth the walk from the Rangitoto Wharf. A really great day trip for the fit is ferry to Rangitoto Wharf, walk over to Home Bay, the across to Rangitoto Summit and down to wharf. 22km round trip, easily doable in a day.
What an awesome experience! Well organised, staff were amazing and will definable be back. Thank you!
Peaceful and nice but some of the walking trails led me to no where and wasted my time. One part i walked, ended up on a ledge which was very dangerous..dont think the gate should have been opened for that track.
