Friendly staff and useful info at the centre. A great spot to increase your.knowledge on NZ birds. Walking traxks and hides well maintained. We were there at lpw tide so missed most of the birds. Try to be there around high tide time
It’s a beautiful place & would love to revisit. When we went there, there were not many birds as we didn’t go during a high tide & also we just went for only a short walk. It will be a good time to go when there is high tide and the 30 mins walk is something would like to try. The place is beautiful then it actually looks in the pictures. The photos are edited with a photo effect, but it is still as beautiful. Worth a visit.
Well worth a visit, especially if you are passing by. If you do call in, be sure to have a chat, if she's free, with the lovely lady working here. She has lots of fascinating facts regarding the migrating birds and their incredible journeys.
Like being one nature and with informed dedicated people who are passionately involved in a common cause, which is to conserve nature and research by tracking, keeping count and educating. The access is easy and folk that venture there are well informed and easy going and friendly. A lot come from the West Coast of Auckland and actively volunteer. I will be back! F Goggin Wellington.
It was quite the bird centre, with an abundance of information on birds and a nice selection of bird books to purchase. It has a free entry and you can donate $5 of you choose to. The scenery, in the summer, is incredible, with the bluest waters. Best of all, it is quiet and calm, as it is off the main road onward to Thames and is far away from the huge traffic jams near the Kopu intersection onward to the east coast of Coromandel. Because of this very few people go anywhere near the west of the Firth of Thames. Bird watching during my visit were early in the morning or past 7pm, in short during high tide. This is something that all visitors need to be aware of.
Staff are wonderful, knowledgeable and very friendly. The hides are functional and tidy and the birds amazing. The new gate and toilet at the main hide are good additions.
Very interesting comfortable site with friendly and knowledgeable staff. Many stuffed birds . Well maintained trail and blinds. A birder must.
Even if you are not that interested in birds this is quite an interesting place. Ideal times to see the bird life is one hour either side of high tide in thames estuary.
A wide variety of birds were seen on our visit to this beautiful coastal area. We visited in November 2019 and saw lots of white faced heron, pied stilts, godwits, sandpipers and oystercatchers. If you are looking for a wild camping area this is ideal!
Always good to visit the centre and the walk along the shoreline. Highly recommend if you haven't visited yet. Such great work is achieved looking out for the birds especially my favourite the Kuaka
