The cottage was really lovely. It had everything you could want. The beds were extremely comfortable with plenty of bedding. The dishwasher was useful for a large group. The location was perfect. Only real negative would be the downstairs bedroom wasn't very well appointed for the members of our family with mobility issues. We booked this cottage because of the downstairs bedroom and en suite. However, there were no grab rails etc so they found it difficult to use the bathroom. On a note of personal taste, the whole party agreed some of the art hanging on the walls the blocks of colour detracted from how nice the property was.
This is a lovely farmhouse style cottage in a quiet and truly beautiful location. There are 180 deg views of rolling countryside from the garden/patio areas and it is close enough to Ashbourne and Wirksworth to be regarded as fairly convenient. The cottage is warm and comfortable and the bedrooms and bathrooms finished to a lovely standard. In my opinion the lounge needs some personal touches as it feels a little corporate, even a little bland? An observation rather than a criticism. Nonetheless we found it to be excellent value for money and a cut above many similar accommodations in the area.
Our stay at Woodpecker Loft for my 40th Birthday with family was amazing! The location was great and the view from the balcony was amazing. The field in front of the lake can be accessed if you walk around the other properties on the site. The cottage was well equipped and we had everything we needed. The owner was on hand to answer any questions. Our stay was amazing and I am sure we will be back at some point to stay again.
This first time family holiday was a fabulous get together , the house was absolutely amazing and the children particularly loved the all the games and the games room . So lovely to have space to eat and relax with a stunning view . Everything clean and well thought out …. Would have been lovely if there was a radio in the kitchen buts that’s just me loving music whilst I cook ! Just loved the whole experience thank you for making it so special…. Oh loved the wood burners made the place very cosy
In many ways this was a lovely holiday place. Nicely done up and everything we needed even if we did have to hunt for quite a while before finding the tea towels!. And a nice location, as long as you’re planning to do things in the lower parts of Derbyshire it’s a bit of a trek if you want to go to Buxton or the high peaks, for example. There were 3 things though that frustrated us we stayed in Barn Owl Lodge: 1. Many of the towels were dirty/stained on arrival, including the bathroom floor mat which had what looked like blood splatters on it. 2. It was possibly not the best option with 2 small children. We had to shuffle furniture around in 1 of the bedrooms to make enough space to fit the travel cot, and it was a very tight squeeze as a result. And although the coffee table is lovely, it’s very big for the area which, with children, felt v in the way. 3. It was disappointing to find that this property has a shared garden - this would’ve been a deal breaker had we known when booking it. It might not have been a problem with the right guest, but we happened to share ours with a couple who smoked a lot of weed and played their music very loudly, which unfortunately spoilt things a bit.
This was our second stay at Millfields, this time in Curlew Cottage. A lovely stay, a great space for groups or families, good sized bedrooms, lovely bathrooms and a really well equipped kitchen. Loved our stay in Derbyshire, will def be back. Thank you
Second stay here for us last week, this time occupying Curlew Cottage and Barn Owl Lodge. Once again, simply lovely. Everything you need, everything you want and Neil, the Caretaker including Glen and their team couldn't do enough for us to ensure we were all comfortable when organising the trip. Thank you so much. The above was from May 2021. Now in October 2022 we returned to Curlew Cottage for the third time. As before the stay was superb. Neil and his team know how to present these holiday homes. Cleanliness is paramount and this gets 5 stars. The facilities get 5 stars. The house is so cosy. If you like the farmhouse type experience with a touch of luxury this is the one for you. Thanks all!
Fantastic farmhouse, beautifully decorated rooms and a huge amount of space for the whole family to enjoy. We spent Christmas at Heron House and all had a wonderful time. The beautiful sunroom is a really special place to spend time in. The photos don't do it justice! We were a party of 13 8 adults and 5 children, all under 5 and there was something for everyone. Hot tub, snug, games room are all highlights. The whole house was super clean and very well maintained and equipped. Excellent kitchen items, luxurious toiletries and plenty of towels. Thank you for a wonderful stay. We'd love to come back in the future. An extra thank you to Neil, the manager, who was very responsive, helpful and accomodating.
We had a really lovely stay at Woodpecker Loft with our parents, and children. The space was lovely and very well thought out, including the kitchen which was very well equipped. There was an issue with the heating in some of the rooms whilst we were there and the owners couldn’t have been better, they sent someone out straight away to rectify the problem. It’s a short walk down to Carsington Water, with lovely walks and a fab play park but our favourite activity was a walk into Hognaston to the Red Lion Inn for a gorgeous lunch!
We had a big get together of family and friends, staying in Heron House, Woodpecker Loft and Swallow Barn. From the very start, the process of selection, getting details and information and also additional help in our case highchairs and travel cot was smooth, courteous, efficient and prompt. We felt in very good hands with Neil and Holly straight away. The properties suited our needs perfectly. As previous reviews have mentioned, they are very clean, perfectly equipped and contain lots of thoughtful decorative touches. Don't miss the photos of Millfield Farm through the ages in the games room! Swallow Barn is perfectly cosy and snug with a lovely view through the large French doors. Woodpecker Loft's open plan layout is perfect for socialising whilst preparing and eating food and relaxing afterwards. The balcony is a superb addition, allowing for a great view, too. It is situated above part of Heron House. Heron House is just stupendously grand and spacious, from the kitchen, dining room, sunroom to the bedrooms and bathrooms. The wow factor does not falter anywhere! You have to see it to believe it. The outdoor spaces are also generous and green. The lake is populated by a flock of geese and the water unfortunately quite murky. Beware of goose droppings on the grass, as the geese have the luxury of grazing everywhere when nobody is there. I guess they have always been there, and we are their guests, too. We did go for a walk around Carsington Reservoir; the Miner's Arms halfway round provided much needed refreshments during the 3 hour round trip. We are still buzzing from the get together and the knowledge that we couldn't have chosen a more perfect location and venue. Thank you so much, Holly and Neil!
