Due to the damage caused by the 7.8 Kaikoura earthquake in November 2016 the Mayfair Theatre will be closed until further notice. We envision a 2020 re-opening. Check our page to keep up with progress!
Kaikoura’s Mayfair Theatre was a purpose built theatre built in 1934, and opened it's doors on the 21st of December that same year. It has survived over the years through the help of the community and is run today by a manager and overseen by a committee of volunteers who help out on a regular basis.
Our seats were generously donated to us by the Cook family from the Art Centre Cinema in Christchurch. The theatre has been painted inside and out in recent times and the Art Deco effect has been preserved.
As of November 21st, 2013 we are running a new 3D projector and have welcomed the Mayfair into the 21st century! It's taken a great initiative from the community to raise the money to allow us to accomplish this amazing task.
