Mataia Homestead & Walks

Story

Located on a 3500ha working sheep and beef farm and private nature reserve on the Kaipara Harbour, historic Mataia Homestead is surrounded by 5 acres of stunning gardens and steeped in a rich family history.

Built in 1891, the 6 bedroom homestead can sleep up to 12 people making it the ideal accommodation retreat for large groups.

During the summer months we offer a range of fully catered walking packages, including the popular 20km, 2 day, 2 night Mataia Walk. Our walking tracks cover the length of the farm and traverse rolling farmland, coastal forest, salt marsh wetlands and native bush. Accommodation is provided in the Mataia Homestead & in our other accommodation, the Farm Cottage.

The gardens and house are open to view by appointment and are also available for corporate retreats and small functions.

Recently stayed here and its was amazing. Sleeps 12 people, the house is beautiful with comfortable beds, a library, piano room, bath, large sized living area with a decent sized kitchen. The house is surrounded by a beautiful flower and vegetable garden and an open lawn. If your are an outdoors person this is the place to stay to get away and enjoy the outdoors. Phone signal is poor but there is wifi available at the house. I spent a lot of my time sitting out on the deck and enjoying the sun in the morning. I would definitely be returning again soon.
Fantastic accommodation. Stunningly beautiful surroundings with beautiful bush walks. Gloriously quiet at night. One of the nicest places I have ever stayed at. Comfortable beds, library, piano, bath etc. I have been going back each year since my first visit in 2015. Strongly recommend Mataia.
We found strawberries and lettuce in the garden which we used in the salad. The bed was comfy. The variety of flowers in the garden was nice. I was locked in my bedroom for a few minutes. The shower was nice and hot. The piano was a bonus.
Lovely venue. Sleeps about 12. Its a little creaky cos its an old house with beautiful wooden floors. 3 toilets, 2 showers. Great fruit and vege garden which you can help yourself to. Plus fresh eggs if you are game enough to hazard the chickens. Perfect for wedding photos. Plus a piano room, and library.
Fabulous experience , lovely and peaceful . Ideal for those that want an energetic getaway or for those that just want to relax. Cosy round the fire in winter or beautiful on the decks or in the garden in summer. Great place for the extended family or a retreat with friends .Very accommodating hosts and the homestead is very well maintained and full of interesting history and memorabilia . An excellent getaway from the hustle and bustle of urban life. We enjoy it so much our group try and go every year.
An Amazing place for a big family or large group for a get away time. The place is like a home away from home. Has all the facilities and quite and beautiful surroundings. The place comes with fruits and vegetables gardens that you can use and has chicken farm to use the eggs. Had an amazing time of bonding with my group here. Definitely recommend. A bit expensive though.
