Some of the information was quite uncomfortable for a European to absorb, but history has its bad and good moments. Lovely staff and great to see the house in a active use
So thankful that we came across this during our visit. We spent almost two hours sharing cultures while witnessing and engaging in traditional spoken and sung lore. The multimedia presentation in the historic lodge was worth the price of admission alone.
Great exhibiton, so glad that the meeting house is in its rightful home.
The light show is absolutely mind blowing. This is also a great place to learn about the local stories.
A must do. Great information awesome light show excellent experience
A beautiful Whare. Love the light show, staff are awesome and the hospitality is great.
Great cultural experience learning about the house and the ancestral stories. Beautiful carvings and great storytelling. Definitely worth a visit!
The story is fascinating. The site has been beautifully established. The Meeting house is marvelous. The standard of restoration has melded well with new and old. The staff are all knowledgeable and genuinely welcoming and friendly. The kumara Maori bread is to die for.
This wharenui's has had an epic journey around the world that started in 1875 returning back home to it's rightful place in Whakatane in 2011
A visit to Mataatua was a great experience. It is very much like Chinese Culture. We have Ancestor Hall for the whole village. The building styles are different. The proposes are the same. To meet, to remember, to trace your root.
