Massey University is the only university in Australasia that offers a defence and security studies programme.
The Centre for Defence and Security Studies at Massey University offers a full range of academic qualifications in security and defence studies, undergrad to PhD, grounded in multidisciplinary research. The center is a research and educational partnership between Massey University and key government agencies in
international security, including the New Zealand Customs Service, the New Zealand Defence Force, New Zealand Police, and Ministry for Primary Industries. Since 2012, the center also has had a close connection with the Royal Brunei Armed Forces, offering the Master of International Security to residential staff at its Command and Staff College.
The center is based on all three Massey's campuses in Palmerston North, Wellington and Auckland, NZ.
Our programmes are available by distance and on campus in Palmerston North. Students study either independently or with their partner agency, such as the New Zealand Police. Although our papers provide excellent professional development for those working in the defence and security sector, they are also applicable to anyone with an interest in society and its security. They can be taken to complement other programmes of study, especially politics, geography, sociology, development studies and history.By studying and learning about the global nature of security issues including the emergent challenges and approaches to addressing them, you can prepare for a career that is challenging, rewarding, and will help make the world a safer place.
