Marineland of New Zealand

Story

Marineland of New Zealand was a marine mammal park in Napier, New Zealand. The park opened in 1965 and closed to the public in 2008. It has had several species of native marine wildlife, including the common dolphin, the New Zealand fur seal, little blue penguin and gannets. Marineland also has California sea lions, a sulphur crested cockatoo, otters and more.History1960sThe history of Marineland began in 1964 when an Auckland architectural firm was commissioned by Napier City under mayor Peter Tait to design an aquarium and dolphin pool. In late January 1965 Marineland caught its first common dolphin, Daphne, and the facility opened two days later. In 1969 two dolphins died when vandals broke in and fed them nails.By the end of the 1960s the site had exhibited dusky dolphins, California sea lions, leopard seals and New Zealand fur seals.1970sThe year 1970 saw bottlenose dolphins and weddell seals welcomed to the site. In 1976 four small clawed otters arrived from Melbourne Zoo. A year later the current General Manager, Gary Macdonald was appointed.

Loved it all. Only disappointment was the small number of tropical marine fish. The tank used to have many more, can this be looked at? They have a huge fascination and so colourful
Great place for tourists to visit. However, I couldn't get past how sad the turtle looked. I know its the best place, as he's protected, but it must be a lonely life. Or am a putting too much emphasis on a sad faced turtle? On the plus side - the staff are awesome
Our family outing here was fantastic. We got to observe the shark feeding in the tunnel area of the aquarium. The divers were great entertainment too; blowing underwater bubbles at the kids! A big favourite of our visit was the dinosaur area. We had to go back twice to see the T. rex again!
An awesome place to have your child's birthday party. My son loves the little penguins so we decided to host his party at the Aquarium. The party-goers had so much fun and the staff were fantastic. I highly recommend.
Great displays, very informative friendly staff. Lots of areas to get close up for excellent viewing. The penguin feeding and talk is well worth attending..
Educational. Interesting. Lots of colourful fish. Even a kiwi. Allow time to look.
Dino, anyone? It's sea creatures day for me and my little one but my daughter stayed here the most as she loves dinosaurs! This dino can roar for sure! Entrance is not too bad as you can come back anytime during the day when you want to view the feeding time for the penguins and the sharks which I reckon is great! Good for any age!
