Eclectic, historic, warm and welcoming. What a magical place. Arrived cold and wet. Greeted with a smile, a warm fire and a lovely dinner with great company. Spent Saturday afternoon by the fire reading. So relaxing. Well worth a visit.Rooms: 5/5
A really pleasant stay. Not only because they speak French But the hosts really care about their guests and make you feel you home. We staid at the Villa, we had the house for ourselves. We're traveling with a 3 years old child. Everything is provided in the house so you feel confortable despite being an old house with cachet. Everything was clean and ready to use. Guests who visit this place have to accept less modern and more simple things. Like reading a book in front of a fire. The area is just stunning. Situated in the middle of mountains and friendly farmers. We had a wonderful stay and highly recommend this place if you're looking for a real retreat house to sit and relax. Listen to the birds and watch nature doing its thing. Merci beaucoup pour votre accueil! Emilien, Audrey and Elliot
We stayed at the Marenui Rural Retreat for one night. The hotel is a bit remote which makes it a perfect place to relax and enjoy the nature. Sue and David are wonderful hosts and the breakfast was great. We even received a tour around the farm to meet the foals.Rooms: 5/5
What a fabulous stay. If you are coming here expecting all the bells and whistles then you may be disappointed. If you appreciate history, very quaint accommodations and exquisite, personable hosts then this is the place. Take the time to enjoy a great breakfast and get to know the hosts. They are lovely
2nd time we have stayed here! Always clean! Away from urban and light pollution... A tranquil place to detox from the dirty city! And dogs are very welcome! Thanks for having us again! AND we WILL be back!!Rooms: 5/5
A wonderful stay with lovely and interesting hosts who really looked after us and showed us around which is in a delightful, quiet setting. Just what we needed after a couple of days in towns and some long drives.Rooms: 5/5
We plus puppy had a wonderful 3 night stay at the cottage on the Mairenui retreat property. Easily accessible for a long weekend from Wellington. David and Sue made us feel very welcome with a fire already going for our night time arrival, milk in the fridge and two types of coffee maker, coffee options and a milk frother my fave. The combination of chopping some kindling for the fire each night plus also having heaters, electric blankets, string wifi and a microwave was perfect! So was waking up after a great sleep in a totally quiet rural environment, to mist draped across the rolling hills and a brisk walk around the property - only to bump into David who suggested we take the puppy to meet his dog Ash - they dashed all over the place as we then headed to the sports horses fields with David to feed them apples. While there we did a short hike into the ruahine ranges, went kayaking with the Awastone team and then had a great hot tub there and dinner. And on the last day, visited glow worm caves and explored the surrounding villages and towns. We could have easily stayed a week, the cottage had everything we needed, great hosts and great location.
Beautiful place . Awsome experience an hosts an food were top notch. Highly recommend this place. Walkability: Lovely bush walks close to retreat.. good cooked by hosts David an Sue was delicious. Food & drinks: Got beautiful roast lamb roast veges an pudding included with accommodation an breakfast was a treat with homemade fruit salad an museli an nice croissant an homemade raspberry jam honey etc cuppa tea in a teapot lol very impressive.
We had a lovely weekend just gone at Mairenui. It was a very special occasion made even more special by the people we met along the way, thank you for being such wonderful hosts Sue and David.
My husband and I stayed one night and we wish we had stayed much longer. The room was very comfortable, food was excellent, David and Sue were so warm and welcoming. We hope to return again. This place is magical!
