We rented a Mad Campers Mad Explorer van recently and had a fantastic trip in it!! This van is an LDV-9- basically a copy of a Ford Transit that we own in California. This van has a diesel motor which makes driving the 3100 km much more economical than a petrol-powered van.nnWe saw mostly the big Maui Class B/C campers on our trip and being less-is-more types we had no regrets with the Mad Explorer as it was easier to drive and park and got great fuel economy.nnThe Mad Explorer has a large lithium battery pack with inverter and solar panel. In our three weeks in this van we never plugged in and used the inverter for the induction cooktop every morning to make coffee. We also used it for the hot water tank for showers & used it also for the air fryer which was a nice appliance to have!nnMad Campers extended our original two week reservation by juggling other bookings and allowed us to have it another week which was fantastic!nnWe made zero reservations as this is our camping style back home as well. For us, it kills the serendipity factor and we've never had a problem- especially in NZ with all the Freedom camping sites as well as the Gov't Conservation sites. The private owned campgrounds put the KOA's of the US to shame!nnLastly- & I probably shouldn't say this: we left an item in the van in haste after ordering our Uber and Mad Campers delivered it to our hotel in Christchurch. We a couple had an amazing trip with Mad Campers and can definitely recommend them for your Campervan adventure in NZ. We rented the „Mad Explorer“ for three weeks and did a relocation from Christchurch to Auckland.nnThe Campervan has everything you need for your roadtrip, the power of the battery is excellent and we stayed every night on Freedom Camping spots. You have a big solar panel on the roof, so you never run out of battery. The battery is strong enough to cook and plug-in an Airfryer and heater.nnThe customer service during pick-up, drop-off and even on the road is excellent: The Mad Campers crew is very supportive, solution-oriented, easy going and responding fast e-mail and phone.nnThere is only one thing we have missed: a go-through cabin. You cannot enter the rear of the van through the driver‘s cabin.nnValue for money is great at Mad Campers.nnThank you Mad Campers for everything - we made once-in-a-lifetime-experiences with you :

It was pure coincidence that I came across a review of Mad Campers online—but what convinced me to book with them was the consistent praise for their customer service and client interactions. And I can wholeheartedly confirm it’s all true.nnFrom the very first contact, the experience was smooth and personal. Connor at the Auckland office and Jess in Christchurch were both fantastic. Jess especially went above and beyond—we had a wonderful conversation about how to make the most of my trip, and she couldn’t have been more spot on. Meeting her in person was the cherry on top. She clearly loves what she does, and she knew Poppie that’s what I named my NoMAD van inside and out.nnAs for the van itself—we clicked the moment I sat in the driver’s seat. It felt reliable, safe, and I trusted it instantly. From Christchurch to Auckland, Poppie and I were true road partners. I didn’t have a single issue—just the best time of my life. I even managed to fit my folding bike inside without compromising on space!nnThe setup was clever, comfortable, and designed with freedom in mind. Absolute 5 star experience. My partner & I work for a camper rental ourselves and where super impressed by the high standards of Mad Campers.nWe booked the Mad Explorer and I‘ve rarely seen such a good layout in a campervan that size. There was so much space available, even a hot shower, so we only stayed at a payed campground once because we liked the view from there. We would’ve been able to completely stay at Freedom Camps without a problem.nWe also had a big suitcase, a small one and a big backpack in the back of the vehicle since we flew into Christchurch and it all fitted easily in the back.nThe staff was super nice when we picked up the camper and also when we returned it. We also forgot a birthday card in the camper without realising and they sent us a picture in a mail of the card, which was super sweet!nnOnly a couple of things didn’t go perfectly but I‘d still give 5 stars: The camper was explained by someone who has probably not done that a lot of times and forgot to tell us about a crucial switch for off grid electricity, but as we chatted to another girl at the station about electricity in campers she realised that that explanation missed, so it was all good in the end. They forgot to give us plates, but we just bought a big chopping board and worked with that and the bowls.nThe water pump is very loud, that’s the only thing that really annoyed us during the road trip. We sometimes didn’t dare to use the shower at night when we stood close to other campers as it would’ve definitely woken them.nnThe car drove smoothly from Christchurch to Auckland over 3 weeks and we didn’t have a single problem with it. We hadn’t driven on the left side of the road before, but it was super easy, both with the camper and the good streets in New Zealand.nnThe pillows and blanket that were included were super comfy and pretty. There were 4 towels and 3 tea towels which was perfect and saved us multiple laundry trips. The fan was also very nice to get air flowing even in areas where sandflies hang around.nnAll in all, I can only recommend Mad Campers and the Mad Explorer for an unforgettable adventure through New Zealand
We hired a Mad Explorer Van, and were blown away with the set up, it had everything we could need!nnJess and the team were beyond helpful and made great suggestions for activities for our adventure, They genuinely cared that we had a great time which for us makes a huge difference in the experience!nnIt truely felt like we had a little home away from home, and has been the highlight of the trip exploring the south island.nnThe Van was easy to drive, and we had no issues using the facilities of the van. We didnt have to plug in once with all the Kms driven charging everything and solar panels for when we were off grid.nnCouldnt recommend Mad Campers enough, we will be back for round 2 in the future.
