It's the my first campervan trip and it's AMAZING! When planning my NZ 10 days trips it took me a while to choose the campervan. Mad Campers stand out and we're super happy we choose it.nIt has everything we need to cook our meals, living place is big enough for two. Fixed bed is amazing as we don't need to arrange it every day. The thing I love most is the door in the living space can be opened on the both side, which means we can have the amazing view we like!nAlso the staff is really kind on answer all my rookie questions for camper van. I would definitely recommend Mad Campers for other travelers who's seeking an Amazing memory in NZ.
We are a retired American couple traveling in New Zealand for three months. We prefer to travel in a camper van, since that is what we have in the US. We originally wanted to rent the Mad Tracker truck camper but they were all booked, so we went with their Mad Explorer. Overall it is a very nice camper van and super easy to drive around on the North Island and get into campsites as well as parking lots. We liked that it had a fixed bed and the large garage space under the bed. It had plenty of storage for food and clothing throughout the living space. It’s equipped with an inverter, solar panels and the battery charges while driving, so power was never a problem for us. The only negatives was the layout of the wet bath which had the vehicle wheel inside which made it hard to use the cassette toilet. Other negatives was the height of the bed made it hard to get into for short people, so we ended up buying a step stool to aide my wife getting in and out. The last negative was the LDV chassis had uncomfortable seats for long drives. Overall we enjoyed our time in the van. Mad Campers personnel in Auckland were super responsive and gave us a very good orientation of the van at pickup. We now have a booking for their Mad Tracker on the South Island, so we will get to compare the two models. I would definitely recommend Mad Campers for your Kiwi adventures.
Highly recommend the 4x4 truck! Couldn’t imagine our trip in any other vehicle. Did a trip in a smaller van in Iceland but this took the cake. The adventurousness of the 4x4 combined with luxury of a little apartment inside made things extremely comfortable for my wife and I. Can’t wait to use Mad Campers again next time we come to NZ! Even had locals impressed and wanting to check out the inside as I was driving around.nBeing a self-contained vehicle we definitely took advantage of the beautiful freedom camping opportunities around... between the batteries and solar panels there was plenty of battery for whatever we needed. We cooked every night and had plenty of LPG as well. Plenty of water/ gray water storage to be self sufficient for multiple days. Perfect for those wandering off the beaten track!
I loved my Mad Campers Nomad van, it was the perfect van for solo travel. It’s intuitively designed and surprisingly spacious and even after 6 weeks it still didn’t feel cramped. Love the company as well, the mad challenges were a great way to enhance the Kiwi experience. Would definitely use them again if I ever get to come back to NZ
We rented a Mad Campers Mad Explorer van recently and had a fantastic trip in it!! This van is an LDV-9- basically a copy of a Ford Transit that we own in California. This van has a diesel motor which makes driving the 3100 km much more economical than a petrol-powered van.nnWe saw mostly the big Maui Class B/C campers on our trip and being less-is-more types we had no regrets with the Mad Explorer as it was easier to drive and park and got great fuel economy.nnThe Mad Explorer has a large lithium battery pack with inverter and solar panel. In our three weeks in this van we never plugged in and used the inverter for the induction cooktop every morning to make coffee. We also used it for the hot water tank for showers & used it also for the air fryer which was a nice appliance to have!nnMad Campers extended our original two week reservation by juggling other bookings and allowed us to have it another week which was fantastic!nnWe made zero reservations as this is our camping style back home as well. For us, it kills the serendipity factor and we've never had a problem- especially in NZ with all the Freedom camping sites as well as the Gov't Conservation sites. The private owned campgrounds put the KOA's of the US to shame!nnLastly- & I probably shouldn't say this: we left an item in the van in haste after ordering our Uber and Mad Campers delivered it to our hotel in Christchurch. Thank you!!nnRoss HightowernLos Osos, CA
