After reading some reviews here we were kind of hesitant, but we booked a Lucky Rover for 4 weeks after all and it was amazing! The pick up was fast and smooth. We got a clear explanation of how the van works. Major shout out to Chantel! She made the pick up such a joy and it was a great start of our trip! Our campervan was obviously used on the inside, but everything was working the way it should and very clean. We have had a great time with the campervan and had no problems at all. We miss her already!
Do your best to ignore the negative reviews! We had such a great experience with these guys so I’ve typed a detailed aka long review to help shed some positive vibes. This review also has tips for anyone coming from out of the country! We booked a camper van Happier 3 Kuga through Happy Campers Jan 13th for a trip march 12th, 2023. Happy campers and Lucky campers have merged, so you’ll get emails from lucky. MAKE SURE TO BOOK YOUR FERRY CROSSING ASAP. Lucky rentals keeps some reserved ferry bookings, so call them to see if they have one for you. Our van pickup was set for Sunday. They have a shuttle that comes to the Auckland airport every hour during the summer/prime months. The shuttle arrived on time, jus 4 minutes after the hour. The shuttle driver Chantelle was sooo cheerful. We get to the rental spot and check-in was straight forward. We walked around our van and noted any visible damage and it was documented. Overall we thought the van was in great shape, but please keep in mind, these are older vans and the entire camper van rental market here is not your standard rental car company where they buy new cars and sell at 40k miles. These vans are kept much longer because a significant investment is put into building out the van after purchase. Anyway, our van was ready for us at our checkin time, clean and tidy, and Everything that needed to work did. It was a 2008 Toyota Hiace and had 376,000 kilometers on it. After pickup the ladies working let us get situated there, get aquatinted to the van and ask questions. They also had free wifi so we googled stuff before heading off. We hung at the rental location for an hour. Make sure to check inside for items left behind by other campers like food supplies that you don’t have to buy. Our van drove us from Auckland to Queenstown and back up to Christchurch. We had no problems with the van the entire time. After the merger, the company is clearly trying to rent vans only ready to go out and the support staff is there to help you if there are issues. For example, we had some stress with our ferry crossing booking because one of the ships was broken, we called Lucky campers and Simon helped us, in such a down to earth way, get everything straight. When we arrived for drop off, we parked and a worker Marissa walked out to greet us. There were lots of people dropping off so you could tell she was a bit overwhelmed, but she was very cheerful and made the check-in process very easy. And tbh, she was just checking to make sure the van was in one piece and was not critical of any small stuff. You do need to have emptied and cleaned the portable toilet prior to coming back. And on the toilet note, our van had a portable toilet and we only used it to urinate in. You can dump it at any holiday park. Ok, onto some general tips we learned from caravaning in NZ: -The 3 main grocery stores in NZ are Countdown, pak n’ save, and New World. None seemed any better than the others. Pak n save did have free WiFi. -the main department store is called The Warehouse -home improvement store is called Mega. -When getting petrol, you pay after pumping. To fill up, take the fuel pump out and hit the button “FILL” on the pump screen. Then fill up and walk inside after to pay. -bathrooms are called “the loo” -For places to sleep, we used an app called WikiCamps. We turned the filter on for only caravan parks and campgrounds. Holiday parks are everywhere and what us Americans call an RV park. They cost about $20NZD per night, per person $12USD. You can also freedom camp but always look for signs first that show no camper vans. -for phone service we used an app called Airalo. It’s an eSim company -I downloaded all of New Zealand for offline use in google maps. was 7 segments. This was absolutely crucial. When driving we’d turn off airalo service to save data.
We booked a small camper Black Sheep through Happy Campers who in the meantime were taken over by Lucky Rentals. We picked it up in the Happy Campers office in Christchurch and dropped it back to Lucky Rentals in Auckland. We were hesitant when we seen so many bad reviews but we had absolutely no problems with the camper or the service provided by the staff in both centres. The staff were all helpful and explained everything to us and were apologetic when the pickup office was busy. The van was clean on pickup and even after driving over 7,000km there were no mechanical issues. We would highly recommend renting from Happy Campers/Lucky Rentals.
I just returned my Lucky Rover and I honestly got choked up! I had such an amazing experience with my van exploring all over North and South Island for two months and she never failed me! For an older van I was expecting something that moved slower, but I had no issues except on the super steep hills that no car could accelerate up lol! I was so pleasantly surprised with how she ran, and I would recommend Lucky to anyone! Having a campervan made my once-in-a-lifetime trip around NZ literally a dream, waking up Oceanside or nestled in mountains… seriously, so sad to leave my van!
Honestly...our van was not that bad. We rented from Auckland. Pros: - checked in right on time van was there and ready for us - van had cutlery, dishes, pots and pans, and a fridge that stayed cold - AC and heater worked - we had no mechanical problems - felt like we got relatively good gas mileage - no issues with the power hookups Cons: - pretty dirty, cushions and bed had weird smell and were very stained. - linens were pretty gross and we didn't use them, def bring your own sleeping stuff - the sink valve leaked and pooled under the cabinet. We just put a small bowl there when using the water and let them know when we returned it. We did call the roadside assistance and they found us a mechanic that was within two minutes of where we were staying and coordinated the entire process. - things were kind of falling apart, there were wires hanging down from the roof and the seal on the door would come loose - again didn't impact where we were trying to go but felt kind of unsafe. - we had contacted them a number of times about the anchors needed for carseats. We were told there was two and that someone would help us install them when we got there. There was only one and so we had to really work to get the seats installed safely. A super nice employee did help us install them and even adjust them for our twins but it was definitely a surprise, but that definitely seemed just chance that he was there and just happened to be able to help. Everyone that we interacted with on the support line and at the rental office was super nice and really helpful. Just minus two stars because the van was really pretty dirty. It's definitely not a luxury van rental place but it did the trick and got us to where we needed to go.
We spent a month touring both islands in a Black Sheep and it was totally amazing!!! Huge thank you to the fabulous team we dealt with during that time, they were all fabulous. The team helped us out so much getting the ferry across because we chose to book through them and was a blessing while on the road. Our little Black Buddy did the job just great for us and we will miss him. For the cost it was awesome, a little basic but just fine for us!! Not one problem or issue and EXTREMELY HAPPY CAMPERS!! Cheers guys, Cheryl & Brendon Perth WA
I was skeptical at first like everyone else after reading some of the reviews about this rental company, especially since their price was the most affordable one, but I have to say that my experience has been really great ! I rented a lucky rodeo for one month and the car, although with a high mileage and some humidity spots here and there inside, was reliable and easy to drive ! I had some slight hiccups on my way : the boot handle broke, but it was just normal wear and tear and it was taken care of really efficiently. My experience was 100% positive because I could see that their customer service were quick to find solutions in case of a problem and always with very nice and helpful people. I can only recommend and wouldn’t hesitate to rent again if it is in these conditions ! Kudos to the team !
To start, my rental was from Christchurch airport, not Auckland! Man was I nervous after reading all of the bad reviews. We had a fantastic experience with Lucky rentals in Christchurch! My friend and I rented the Lucky Rambler for a road trip around the south islands west coast. For these vehicles being much older, our van was in great condition and had everything we needed! It ran great the entire time. For people complaining about wait time upon pickup and drop off, have some patience! Expect about an hour to be there. They did great checking in multiple groups at once and getting them into their vans. All of the staff was very friendly and answered all of our questions. The only thing I regret was not getting more in depth detail of where all the stuff for the dump station was grey water dump, how to empty the toilet but these things are easy to youtube and most everyone in new zealand is so friendly that strangers helped us out the first time! I would highly recommend Lucky rentals!
We originally hired through Happy Campers but the whole process was handled excellently by Lucky Rentals. Good customer service, pick up and drop off and great, quick responsive communication when we had a query about our van mid trip. The van was basic but met all our needs and for the price we paid we expected that! The lady who served us in Auckland was really lovely!
There were some things that were not so nice about our 2 months rental of a happy kuga 3. But overall we were pretty satisfied. Our camper was technically quite sound and most things just worked fine. We had to get the battery checked and subsequently replaced. The seal of the fridge door was missing. After we reported it they send us one from another camper, which was quite dirty but worked. We had booked the best insurance, they offer, and when we smashed a window by accident it was replaced and paid without problem. So overall if you want the cheapest camper, you‘ll have to make some sacrifice. But if you can live with a little old and dirty, it‘s alright
