Great experience. We rented a Sleeper for 3 months 13 weeks and toured New Zealand >10k kms with it and all we can say is it was brilliant.nGreat value for money - and excellent customer service.nLucky Rentals is cheaper than most rentals we looked at and that comes at the cost of having slightly older vehicles. As a result we had a few hiccups here and there one side door was difficult to open, sometimes the car would make new noises or a window or door would be a bit jammed… but nothing you wouldn’t get with any older car !nThat said, when we did have a minor issue that halted our trip nail in one of the tyres, Lucky Rentals’ customer service was beyond expectations. The staff were extremely kind and helpful, and we got a fix in a matter of hours. Seamless experience. Worth mentioning that both in Auckland and Christchurch locations, we were met with lovely staff as well.nnIn terms of daily logistics we hired a couple chairs and a table which were very useful throughout the trip. The small engine only fridge was fine to store food for a couple days at a time with ice packs and anyways we’d stop in campgrounds with fridges regularly.nAlso worth noting the van provided a lot of storage room compared to many other vans which was super nice with all our camping gear, surf gear etc.nOnly thing to note is the mattress isn’t too thick so after a bit it can become uncomfortable - but we’d just go camping or sleep in a hostel now and then and then we’d be super happy to hit the road again ! Bear in mind we were travelling for 13 weeks so this probably wouldn’t be an issue for shorter periods.nnAnd final important dot was it was super chill to drive, very comfy.nnSo lucky rentals was definitely instrumental in making our trip unforgettable! Thank you !
We rented a camper from Lucky Rentals for 74 nights, from mid-February to the end of April. We originally booked the Happy Sleeper but got super lucky and received an upgrade to the Lucky Rodeo – which was awesome! The van was really new, had just around 120,000 km, looked great inside and out, and had tons of space and storage. We drove over 11,000 km across both the North and South Islands, and the van held up perfectly the entire time.nnPick-up in Auckland was super smooth. Gustavo was great – really chill, friendly, and honest. Only downside was that the van wasn’t super clean when we got it. We had to do a bit of deep cleaning ourselves, especially the gas stove and sink area. Some of the kitchen stuff was a bit dirty too, but we could swap things like dishes and even leave behind stuff we didn’t need anymore – very flexible.nnWhat really stood out was the amazing customer service. We had a few small issues fridge, sink, broken tail light and each time we contacted Lucky, we got a reply in seconds and a nearby workshop appointment within 30 minutes – everything got fixed or replaced for free. So if something’s off, don’t worry, just message them and they’ll sort it.nnReturn was also super easy – again with Gustavo – just cleaned it out a bit, quick check, and we were done.nnAlso, we have to say: the price was incredibly cheap for over two months of van life. We were a bit unsure at first because of some older reviews, but honestly, we had a great time. Pro tip: go for the smaller models like the Rodeo – they seem to be newer than the big ones.nnAll in all, great experience – would definitely recommend!
Perfect experience with Lucky Rentals. Hired a van in Christchurch for 19 days and returned it in Auckland. Saved probably $500-1000 compared to other rental companies because vehicles are older ours was a self-contained valid green tag Toyota Hiace with 438 000 km. But we had no issue and the vehicle proved to be extremely well maintained. The price for adds-on is very reasonable too. They were also very flexible on the return time no extra charge if you are late as long as it is within same day. In summary a great experience.
We have just finished our 6 week road trip around New Zealand in a Lucky Rover and cannot fault whatsoever don’t take bad reviews as gospel. Lucky Rentals customer service was amazing from start to end even when we had a slight engine mishap and had to call the breakdown number - they were great at sorting things out quickly. The vans may be slightly older but are very well looked after and more than capable of travelling the distance. Would not hesitate to recommend to anyone planning a NZ road trip.
Distinctly average with exception of the staff who were great. The campervan was very old and unclean see photos, in need of a bit of TLC. Even a few small changes would make a difference, such as updating the curtain hooks or providing bedding which isn't clearly left over from someone's kid see photos. We couldn't afford the really expensive brands but I wish we'd spent just a little more to get a decent van. Having said that, the van was functional and we didn't have any engine issues during the 18 days.
