Good prices. Friendly staff specially Kimi, she was lovely. I arrived late on my check-in and she received me nicely.nThe van was clean and easy to drive even though they're not brand new. Everything you need is included.nI would recommend.
You get what you pay for, or actually, in my view, you get more than what you pay for with Lucky. Their vehicles are relatively old, customers should be aware of that. One can't expect to pay substantially less than with any other rental agency here in NZ and still get a luxury or almost new vehicle. Our Toyota HiAce Kuga was from 2013 and had 213'000 km on the clock and cost us NZD 9'000 for 9 weeks including everything except petrol, of course.nnThat's a pretty sweet deal, if you ask me.nnIt comes at a cost though. Our vehicle squeaked most of the time I got rid of some of the noise with duct tape here and there. Things are loose like the fire extinguishers, until I fixed it with double sticky tape. The cleanliness could be more thorough we found a pair of underwear and socks. But the vehicle was a good one. Strong engine 2.7 liter, good brakes, tires, etc. Reliable. Not the shadow of an issue on that front.nnThe fridge door just fell off, when we tried to fill it, so we went back to Lucky and they fixed it right away. Underway we had another two small issues with the car and Lucky found a shop that fixed it instantly well, we still wasted half a day on that, but the Lucky support did a good job.nnOne thing to mention is communication. Upon asking, we were told at the beginning of the trip that we could give the vehicle back earlier and get a refund at that time. However, when we later tried to arrange such an earlier drop off, it wouldn't be possible anymore, we were told. Since we already had made other arrangements, that caused us quite some grief and it took almost two weeks before Lucky finally agreed into giving us at least 80% refund after all. So a bit of a hassle which did cost us money, but eventually Lucky agreed to honor more or less the verbal agreement we had made.nnI've read most of the other reviews here and elsewhere and feel that some of them stem from unreal expectations and thus are unfair.nnI was considering 4 stars, but in the end I am pretty satisfied with Lucky overall and they therefore got 5. Possibly also because the woman Chantelle was here name, I believe in Auckland was extremely friendly and helpful.
I was a little apprehensive seeing the reviews before we picked up our camper but for the most part the experience was pretty seamless.nnI wasn't sure if the pick up time was set in stone a few days before we arrived in NZ and so I emailed to find out. Obviously being a 13 hour time difference between there and the UK I had to wait until their opening times but they got back straight away with a clear and helpful answer.nnWhen we collected the staff were really friendly and helpful, explained everything clearly and after going around the camper and noting any existing damage to the exterior or chips in the windscreen I felt confident in driving off.nnThey weren't sure if the LPG canister was full or not so they recommended we go to a fill up point they provided a map of some in the Auckland area we had a few errands to run then we took it to a fill up place. This was an issue as they noted the valve was faulty and leaking, not safe. We called the roadside assistance number Lucky provided and as we weren't far from the depot they said we were best to take it back. A little annoying as it was a 40 minute drive in the opposite direction we were headed. When we arrived we explained and they apologized and replaced the valve with a new one. We were good to go again.nnOther than that we didn't really have any issues. The vans are old so don't expect clean and fancy, they are very used, hence the cost. Our van had 400,000 Km on the clock. They're not the most fuel efficient but depends how far and where you're driving it we went north then allllll the way south, across on the ferry and all around the south Island they also aren't much fun to drive in the wind and it is pretty windy here.nnThey're easy to drive as they're automatic. The only other issue was that about halfway through our holiday the check engine light came on, it was intermittent and so I phoned the roadside assistance again and they said if the performance seems unaffected don't worry and to let them know if anything changes. It was fine, the van never broke down the whole time we had it, a couple times it took a moment for it to turn over when I turned the key but not once did it not start.nnIn terms of storage there isn't much, we had a big suitcase and it lived on the top bed most of the time, I don't know how more than 2 people stay in them.nnWe picked up in Auckland and dropped off in Christchurch and the drop off was super simple. Around the corner from the Christchurch depot there was a BP garage where we could fill the tank up required by lucky at drop off and there were also buckets and cleaning poles so you can give the van a good wipe down dead bugs galore on the front and there is also a waste water drop point too also required to be done prior to drop off so that made life easier. When we got to Lucky rentals a chap came out checked the van over, I explained about the check engine light and then we said our goodbyes and that was it.nnSo to summarise, don't expect a fancy vehicle as they are well used. We had a few minor issues but the customer service was very good from our experience. Technically I'd be more than happy to use them again in the future but if money allowed I'd probably go for something a bit nicer to drive as I was the only driver and it was quite tiring.nnAlso, we went for the no worries cover, you get the table and chairs for sitting outside, all I'll say is if you're planning on stopping a lot or staying in free camp areas great take them. If not, most camper sites have park benches next to where you park so most of the time they were in the way
We found the company initially great to deal with but when we tried to get a ride from the airport to the pickup location they never answered so we had to pay for an expensive taxi. The service at the pick up was great such a friendly lovely woman the camper was what we expected a few minor thing didn’t work well but on the whole it was ok. On the way home we tried to call them again and never answered the phone that’s why we’ve give a 4 star rating.
I would not recommend anyone to book with Lucky Rentals. We were given a van with two large stone chips in the visible area. We didn't take it and got an alternative that was just as dirty and disgusting as the first car. There was mold and spack everywhere, even in the vents, which was very smelly when in use. The whole roof was full of mold, the windows leaked. The upholstery was completely worn out and had lots of stains. There were dead insects such as spiders and flies in the car. The blackout curtains were all torn out and we had to buy cable ties to make it a little dark in the van. We emailed several times to ask for them to be repaired, but there was no response. We were only told that it was the lowest category we had booked. We only know that the category indicates the size and facilities and not the condition. It was really bad. The car was always damp inside and stank. The cool box was broken and froze everything, so we often had to throw food away. The kitchen equipment was poor and incredibly dirty. There were cable ties on the outside of the car that held parts together. We also saw another car from the rental company that was taped up. When we returned the car, we also saw better cars, but equally bad ones. I wouldn't hope to get a newer or better maintained one. Only the shuttle and the fact that the car was driven were okay. I really don't say thank you for five weeks in this moldy car!nThis pictures are just examples, we have so much stuff
