The closest car park to get to the LoTR movie set, Hobbit's Hideaways and Frodo's Reading Tree.nnI went up to Mt. Victoria Lookout and go down following Alexandra Rd. Go pass the parking lot with kids play ground and the next one is this spot. It's not that big and just like a sideway but it gives you the access to the entry to LoTR movie set and stairs to Mt. Alfred as well
As one of the biggest LOTR fan I really enjoyed the walks in the forest. We found a few spots where a few scenes were shot. But it was a bit difficult to find them to be honest. After being lost for an hour we found a map in the middle of the forest where you can see where the the Hobbit-Walk is. We wished to have seen the map at the beginning of the forest but nevertheless we enjoyed the unplanned walk anyway. We crossed a hobbit tour, so that would be another great way of exploring the scenery.
Before you go, read this to help you find the 3 locations hidden in this park. First, I recommend reading walkingintomordor . com - they have a page that helps you find your way.nFollow the yellow path down to the fork in the path after Gandalf's quote bench. Go straight down to find the tree Frodo smoked his pipe and read his book in red in map picture. Unlike what most websites tell you, it's super easy to get to because it's just off the path. Just look left for the tree that looks like my second picture, that's the back of the tree.nnTo get to the hobbit hideaway blue on map picture, at the fork in the path you'll need to turn right or left if coming from the tree. Find the tree that looks like the third picture, and you'll be right where the hideaway is. It looks different because the big tree was a prop but it's easy to see in comparison to the big tree!
Park here and walk down to see the film locations. Limited space though. Tour buses also stop here so this stop will be the best.
Really nice park and so much to see here!! LOTR stuff for sure, but it's also just a great stand alone park. It's not very crowded, but you will probably see a tour group come through at some point. Still, you can get some amazing views of Wellington from here and the nature is breathtaking.
