Little River Campground

About

Classic down-to-earth kiwi accommodation in tranquil native forest near Akaroa, just 45 minutes from Christchurch. www.littlerivercampground.co.nz

Story

Little River Campground, formerly Birdlands, has something for everyone. Big enough to lose yourself in the lush wilderness, but small enough for intimate gatherings.

Ideal for relaxed weekends away or weddings, retreats, private parties and work social functions with the added advantage of affordable onsite accommodation. Plan a romantic getaway in one of our cute rustic cabins or have a chilled out camping holiday with your family.

We like camping as it use to be — kids playing in the river or enjoying the fun, spills and adventures down the mudslide or on the trampoline while you sit back and relax knowing they are safe and enjoying themselves.

We are not part of a chain of holiday parks, preferring the independence for a relaxed family atmosphere. The perfect base for exploring Banks Peninsula.

Please note our facilities are very basic with waterless loos, but we do have hot showers.

Little River Campground is owned and run by Megan and Marcus who took over the campground in late 2009 after the former bird sanctuary, Birdlands, closed down.

Little River Campground is home to stands of centuries old native tress, such as Kahikatea, Matai and Totara. Second growth hardwood species include Kanuka, Manuka, Manatu Kowhai, Kotukutuku, Tarata, Kawakawa, Mahoe and Puahou. We are avid conservationists and remain committed to ensuring the native flora and fauna within our little paradise in the Banks Peninsula remains forever protected.

Mission

To make your stay a happy, relaxed and informed holiday.

Products

Tent sites, powered van or caravan sites, 5h of native bush and a small stream.

"On the way to Akaroa, Banks Peninsula's only dog friendly campground. 5 hectares of native habitat to explore. Great for kids but with secluded kid free camping areas too.45 minutes from Christchurch and the gateway to the peninsula. A classic kiwi campground nestled in a sunny, sheltered valley beside a little river. Powered sites, tent sites, and cute cabins. Eco camping with hot showers, an open kitchen cooking area, waterless toilets, playground. Some trees are hundreds of years old, which the bird life love. We have a small, safe river to splash in, a huge water slide and giant swings. There are not many places like this left in NZ, so if you are wanting a unique place to stay on Banks Peninsula, consider us."

Fantastic campground. We stayed here with the kids and dog over Christmas 2021 sorry it's taken so long to leave a review. Marcus was very busy with lots of people arriving but took the time to show us around and to ensure we found the best site possible to suit us. We all had an amazing time, even the dog was surprisingly relaxed and well-behaved. So much to do and explore, especially for the kids. Facilities were very clean and well-equipped. We LOVED the nostalgic atmosphere of the campground, where kids and kids-at-heart were left to be kids, having the freedom to have their own adventures, without overly protective restrictions being placed on them. It truly felt like a trip back in time to the 80's for my wife and I, when we grew up. A very unique and beautiful place. Highly recommended.
Thank you Marcus for a very enjoyable stay in The Container for 3 nights. Showers are hot and powerful. Campsite is clean and well laid out. Bush walks up the hill are pleasant. A great little Campsite.
Our family of 5 have both stayed here and visited for the day, it's THE BEST place for young and old! The kids absolutely love it! From playing in the river, bush walks, feeling the eels, the giant swing, slippery slide. The list goes on! The owners are always very helpful and friendly. Will always come back here :
Amazing place. Brilliant for families with children. They can explore happily. Great that there are no cars too. Makes it even safer for children. Outdoor kitchen has toaster, microwave, kettle and fridge which is super handy. Make sure you have a hammer for your pegs, the ground is very hard!
Great place to camp. Surrounded by nature. Feed the eals under the little bridge. Lovely bush trails too. Only a short bike ride to the Little River rail trail.Service: 5/5
An amazing little eco campground so close to nature! Only stayed one night but it was the best site we stayed at. I loved the use of upcycling old materials to build the various facilities, it gave the place a lovely quirky feel. The compost toilets were great, they didn't smell at all. You do have to take all rubbish away with you, but that's the nature of the site, so wasn't an issue. Marcus was celebrating his wedding anniversary the day we stayed, which he had told us in advance so I wasn't expecting to see him, but he was there when we arrived and was so accommodating and friendly! The highlight for me though was the nature trail, it was fantastic! It featured boardwalks, swings, bridges, a waterslide open at certain times, complete unexpected objects and beautiful eels in the river! And the whole campground was alive with birdsong, it was the most incredible that we heard during our stay in NZ. If we ever go back to NZ, we'd 100% stay at Little River again!
We just enjoyed our first time camping here and what a treat it was!! Beautiful eco and dog friendly camp with a wee river running right through the middle. Marcus was a great host, everything was tidy and clean. Kids LOVED all the river swings, the water slide and the massive tree swing. Adults enjoyed the beautiful walks and serenity! Cant wait to return!!
This is such a beautiful campsite in an amazing little nature reserve! We had such a peaceful stay! The outdoor kitchen is also a great, well equipped space.Service: 5/5
We went looking for a place to spend the night, shower, wash clothes and throw out garbage. The manager was not there. The laundry was closed. You can't litter. You have to pay for showers the price per night is NZ$47, the same as a Holiday Top10, where showers are free, even water wasn't treated. The next day the owner did not arrive, so we left even better given his attitude in the responses to the reviews on Gmaps. So if you travel with this idea it is not at all recommended, better a free one or from the DOC.
Lovely place with lots to do. Loved the outdoor fire pit and boardwalks through the forest.Rooms: 5/5
