Had great expectations as highly recommended when we called in for lunch last Wednesday.nMy spinach & feta tart was so salty I could hardly eat it and only did because I was hungry. My partner tried it and said I need to complain, it was awful, I downed a whole bottle of iced tea to abate the saltiness in my mouth and went to complain while ordering a cake to try and get rid of the salt taste. The young lady said she would tell the chef but I was not offered a refund or any discount on my overpriced cake which took another 10 minutes to appear. Staff all young and customer service non-existent.
I'm somewhat disappointed with my experience at this cafe. Situated in Little River with beautiful surroundings, I arrived at 1.50, knowing that the breakfast menu finished at 2pm. Unfortunately there was a large queue and by the time I got to the front it was 2.02, and I wasn't allowed to order from the menu. Disappointing that they were so strict on this, but okay, I resorted to ordering cabinet food.nnI ordered a braised beef cheek pie and regular flat white for $19. The pie would have been good quality if it had been cooked properly, but sadly it was microwaved and so the pastry was soft. It came with no garnish, not even a few lettuce leaves. The coffee was good, but on the small side. Overall I don't feel that it was good value for money.
Called into the Little River Cafe on 5th January around 11.30 am. It was already extremely busy. We joined the long queue to place our order as we were undecided on our selection at that stage a sign does say that you can jump the queue & order from another counter, which is excellent providing you know what you want. While standing in line, behind us came and almighty crash caused by young staff throwing bottles into a bin, with tremendous force, scaring the crap out of people in the queue. This happened a 2nd & 3rd time, again by the young staff, behind the counter. We were seated with our meal & drinks, on the latter occasions, & again almost flew into orbit with the unnecessary force these bottles made their target. It was like they had a secret challenge going on, to see who could make the loudest crash, amongst themselves. We were not the only ones visibly alarmed by this sudden noise.nAbout time they learned or were trained as to how to behave in a more professional manner towards customers who at the end of the day, pay their wages. Without us, they wouldn't need to bother turning up. Rant over. Future customers 'beware'. The place seems to be run by kids.
It's a favourite spot for my friends and me to have a break, coffee and enjoy the scenery on the way to Akaroa from Christchurch. It's almost halfway between Christchurch and Akaroa. IOwners and all the staff are super friendly. I have enjoyed almost all of their menu at different times, and I love their pizzas the most. I love pizzas anyway. It is more enjoyable to sit outside on a sunny day, really great views and sometimes. It's nice to watch sheep grazing the cafe garden.
Busy is a sword with two edges. Yes, we love your creations. But it exposes your ability to handle demand. These guys have worked this out and delivered every one of our 6 visits. The team is young and not young, experienced and inexperienced, but always willing. And it trundles along. Yes, the sweets are all sweet enough for instant impact diabetes. Sometimes, the toasting goes so far as to start a burns ward. But generally everything is yim and well made, pretty much here. The shop has some interesting supplies, but doesn't excitement, and it would be better for some of the decent fruit and veg the cafe uses. But im guessing the cafe suck up produce like a thirsty elephant.nThe queue will pretty much always be there. While you can order takeaway at the shop counter, I suggest you allow time to line up, change your mind 3 times about what to have, and take the weight off your feet thereafter, with a short wait for your order to arrive.
