Started in 1990, mainly music is a fun music group for parents or primary care givers to enjoy together with their young child. Throughout the session, children develop gross and fine motor skills, language, imagination, mathematical and pre-reading skills as well as socialize with others. Each mainly music is associated with and is run by volunteers from a local church. Children are introduced to music, creativity and more, plus families given a chance to think about the God-part of life. Amazing to think that all this can be achieved in a loving, shared family environment.
A message from our founder, Jo Hood
Hi there. I’m Jo Hood and I lead the mainly music organization.
Over more than 20 years, mainly music has been a part of my life. It all started when our first born, Rebecca, was young. She and I attended a community-based music session. While it didn’t have the structure of mainly music. It was fun and enjoyable. We didn’t go all that often but because of some changes to the session, it became the catalyst for what is mainly music today.
After talking through the idea with my friend, Tessa, we began mainly music at Hillsborough Baptist Church in Auckland, New Zealand.
What you experience today is quite different to what the first group of mums and children participated in! We’ve grown and developed the concept over the years into a fun, interactive thirty minute session with an eat/play/chat time.
The dream we have for your mainly music experience is that you’ll find the session a safe, nurturing space where connection occurs.
You can connect with your young one. The session is designed to be interactive – a space for you and your child. Or your child and their home-based caregiver. Or maybe Nana!
You can expect to connect with others who are at the same life stage. Sessions are full of parents – first time ones, well-versed ones, even those of us who have grown up kids – connecting with adults in your week is pretty important. Being able to finish a conversation or even a sentence! Knowing you’re not alone in this role of ‘parent’ and receiving genuine encouragement during the journey.
We want your child to connect with the music and more. Sure, we’re not music teachers, but we’ve learned how to bring out the best in most children and help them with numeracy and literacy skills, gross and fine motor skill development. They’ll learn concepts and use their imagination, learn to follow instructions and lots, lots more.
And finally, we’d love you to connect with the local church who make the session happen. Churches are more than a place of spiritual nurture; they’re also a place of community and friendship. Many churches provide practical assistance – like marriage ceremonies and baby dedications as well as a place for you and your family to explore God. They provide help through the tough times – like conducting funerals, counselling, or food parcels.
It’s my dream – actually this is the vision our Boards and our staff members have also – that you’ll find each of these points of connection happening in your mainly music experience.
