Absolutely fantastic walk! Absolutely gorgeous with a small creek on the side of the walkway! Quite a few stairs to climb up and down, but railings to assist you if needed! Perfect for a walk anytime of the day!
Le Roy's Bush Reserve is one of the very popular tramping bushes in the North Shore of Auckland. You can either enter from Hinemoa Street in Hibury or from the Little Shoal Bay side and the loop track runs for about 3km. Generally considered an easy route, it takes an average one and a half to two hours to complete the loop. This is a very popular area for birding, running, and walking, so you'll likely encounter other people while exploring. Dogs are allowed but must be on a leash. It has a nice canopy of trees with lots of interesting flora and fauna. It contains lowland forest with significant presence of kauri-tanekaha, broadleaved, and pohutukawa with wetland associations to the nearby estuary. The Shoal Bay Stream is habitat for indigenous fish including inanga, banded kokopu, longfin eel and shortfin eel. Le Roy's Bush is roughly about 12 hectares in extent and has been extended from the original block by addition of further purchases of bush-clad back yards. It extends from Highbury in Birkenhead down a valley between Birkenhead Point and Onewa Road, where it joins the Little Shoal Bay Reserve 7.5 hectares and Lutmers Reserve 2.6 hectares near Wilding Ave in Northcote. Le Roy's Bush was originally purchased by Edward Le Roy in 1918. He established three ponds where he grew water lilies and kept goldfish. After his death the reserve was purchased by a public subscription organized by the North Shore Branch of the Forest and Bird Society. Little Shoal Bay is a destination on its own, having a picnic area with BBQ, a small beach for swimming at high tide, a playground and over the road, bowling club, a tennis court and a basketball court.
Long and beautiful walk, the greenery around is pleasing to the eyes, you might see brids like kingfisher and fantails. Please clean your shoes while entering and leaving the reserve.
LOVED IT. Excellent walking tracks, dense bush and expansive valleys, streams and waterfalls, and beautiful bird life. HIGHLY RECCOMMEND.
A great walk - from Little Shoal Bay across the fields up through the bush to Birkenhead then down the roads to the Bay again about 5km
Walked there today by accident after following google maps directions. Feels like entering a whole different world and exploring a deep rainforest in south america or Asia. Amazing and out of this world experience.
A well maintained reserved, some entrance is closed, so check before going. Beautiful water flow, bridges and steps.
Awesome bush board walk ,water fall aswell, lots of native trees and bush ,loved it.
Awesome bush walk through the heart of Birkenhead. Hidden rainforest feels like you are walking through tropical rain forest. Almost the whole walk is on solid built wooden walkways. Start from the top of Hinemoa Street and enjoy the relaxing walk down to Little Shoals Bay. The walk back is a bit tough at the end when walking up the last flight of stairs back to Hinemoa but not too bad. You can always take little breaks and enjoy the scenery.
Lovely new board walk that is also a lovely bush walk. About 30 mins each way of easy walking. A few stairs so no unruly trail bikers.
