Lake Rotopounamu

Story

Lake Rotopounamu is a secluded lake in the Pihanga Scenic Reserve, in the Tongariro National Park in New Zealand's Central North Island. It lies at the northwest foot of Mt Pihanga, and was formed by a landslide around 10,000 years ago. The lake is fed by seven streams, but has no visible surface outflow. It is believed to drain underground.RecreationAround the lake is a scenic 5km loop track, which can be accessed from the Pihanga Saddle road (State Highway 47) between Turangi and Tongariro. Walking this track takes about two hours.

Love this walk, short incline then relatively easy walk around the lake, about two thirds of the way around there is a lovely beach, great spot for lunch and a swim. Lovely mature native trees. Good morning or afternoon outing and not too physically demanding. Be careful on the road side at the car parking area, especially with young children, as many cars, going in both directions, speed past and don't slow down, making it seem dangerous.
Nice views of this lake and a quite walk away from city life. Tongariro National Park secluded this lake and serene walk
Again something we were missing for ages. Very worth the visit. Make sure you’ve done the whole circuit
Great little track for photos and a wander. Don't expect vast views, very dense forest with a lake in the middle.
Stunning place. Easy walk around the lake either way. Only a few steps and we saw a few strollers hiking around. Beautiful native fauna including some massive trees. Water is clean and clear. Heard lots of frogs and heaps of native birds. 6.2kms in total. Take a picnic and your camera.

Great walk, lovely lake, quiet and calm. Beach was just for us to enjoy. Go on a sunny day. The only steep part is the track from the parking to the beginning of the track
Beautiful. Secluded. Hidden gem. Great little relaxing point in between plethora of other fantastic hikes and scenery.
Nice walk around the lake. Mysterious atmosphere and beautiful views even during the rainy weather.
