Story

Lake Ngaroto is a peat lake in Waipa District of New Zealand.Located 19 km south of Hamilton and 8 km north-west of Te Awamutu, it has a surface area of 108 ha, making it the largest of the Waipa peat lakes. The lake is hypertrophic, leading to eutrophication with corresponding poor water quality.HistoryThe Battle of Hingakaka was fought nearby, and the sacred carving Te Uenuku lost at this time. It was re-discovered in 1906, and now resides in the Te Awamutu Museum.Recreation Power boats are banned from the lake, so Lake Ngaroto is popular for sailing and rowing. During the New Zealand Duck Shooting Season (May and June), the lake is used for duck shooting. Waipa District council has constructed a 6km track around the lake, part gravel and part boardwalk. It is popular with walkers and runners and recreational cyclists. There are several public toilets.

Spent several days here. Fascinating history. 6kms of easy track/boardwalk/cycle trail around the lake perimeter. Clean toilets and it has small rubbish bins. Quite busy with fishermen during the daytime.
Finally found Nigel after all of these years. Managed to snap a quick photo with him and had a good bonding session. He didn't tell me why he ran away though...seems a bit fishy, don't you think?
Amazing place, quiet and beautiful, supprised me when open the curtain at morning
Great day to do some weaving, The place was buzzing with kid's in their yachts on the lake. Trekkers walking the loop and others picnicking. The view and atmosphere priceless
Great walk, variety of scenery, good parking, boardwalks and bridges along the trail
Beautiful place, we were in a campervan and parked overnight! Woke up to this beautiful view, well worth a visit for the view, or overnight!
A really lovely, flat, accessible and well-maintaned track mostly boardwalk around the lake with loads of both way-finding and interpretive signage explaining the unique history of the lake and it's importance to local Maori. It took me and my partner exactly an hour, but we are very brisk walkers.
Beautiful lake and wetland. There is a walking track around the lake suitable for all abilities. There are public toilet facilities.
Peaceful, plenty of bird life. Fishing from the lake. There is on swimming in the lake. It is not clean .
