Story

KORU® Plumac c.v. is a great tasting new apple variety, discovered in New Zealand!

Where most new varieties are 'discovered' through years of scientific breeding tests, the story of KORU® Plumac c.v. is more of a 'down home' and natural feeling.

KORU® Plumac c.v. was discovered as a chance seedling by Geoff Plunkett in his garden in Upper Moutere, Nelson in 1998. Geoff and his wife, Marilyn, figured out that the plant grew from a decaying apple that was tossed into their garden bed by his mother-in-law. Geoff's curiosity gave the tree a chance to produce fruit and being an experienced commercial grower himself, he was impressed with the quality of apples it produced.

It was known by Geoff that the apples discarded were Fuji, therefore the female parent is Fuji. DNA testing has indicated that the other parent is Braeburn. This result is also substantiated by the block layout from where the discarded apples were picked.

After several years of testing on blocks throughout New Zealand, the apple which Geoff originally referred to as 'Kotabaru' meaning "new beginnings' in aboriginal, the apple now has a denomination of Plumac and the fruit is being marketed using the registered brand KORU® and is receiving worldwide attention.

After several years of testing the apple has moved into commercialization and has proven to be a world wide apple.

KORU® Plumac c.v. is now grown in both the Southern and Northern hemispheres and has been in retail just a few years.

KORU® Plumac c.v. is under controlled production and is exclusively available from McGrath Nurseries Limited who hold the world rights to production and marketing. (McGrath Nurseries Ltd works as an agent for Global Plant Variety Administration Ltd (GPVA) which is a privately owned company also 100% owned by Andy McGrath and is the intellectual property company holding many plant variety licences including Plumac.)

McGrath Nurseries Ltd has provided the dominant role in development and commercialization of this excellent apple variety by undertaking many years of thorough independent scientific testing, organizing a group of testers and growers throughout New Zealand. This has been followed by PVR and Trademark protection, consumer testing and commercialization. We are currently testing worldwide and putting together a marketing team to develop the apple to its fullest potential. We provide ongoing monitoring and reporting, including royalty collection and remittance, for the growers and owners.
