Kohuroa Stream Track is a walking route located in Northland, New Zealand. The track is suitable for most walkers but be aware of couple of sharp descending/ ascending wooden steps depending on where you start. Northern entry starts on the Leigh Road while the southern entry is from the Matheson beach. You can also make it a loop by walking on the Matheson Bay Road and generally it takes around forty minutes to one hour to finish the loop.nnIt follows the Kohuroa Stream and the route stays close to the stream for much of its length, providing consistent shade and cooler conditions. The stream has a couple of cascading waterfalls with several swim holes and finally flows into the sea at Matheson Bay.nnVegetation along the track includes kanuka, manuka, young kauri and totara, and patches of kahikatea. Ground cover is dominated by ferns and mosses, especially in damp sections. The track surface is mostly on-board walks with occasional firm gravel sections. There are small bridges to cross wet spots. Birdlife is abundant and walkers may encounter pīwakawaka, tūī, and kererū along the track.nnThe track is clearly signposted at both entry points and maintained to a standard suitable for casual walkers rather than trampers. Walkers should still be mindful of fallen trees that require ducking or careful footing. After heavy rain, some sections can become washed out and slippery, so extra caution is advised.
Hidden gem! Small walk down to the beach or up from there, next to beautiful Kauri trees and stream with few small falls. Well done!
This is a good relatively short walk that is well maintained boardwalk almost all the way. We started at the Leigh Road end so it was downhill to start then uphill to get back, with quite a few steps to come back, so you may want to consider starting at Matheson Bay Reserve and have the uphill part at the start rather than the finish.nnThe waterfall is not that big but it is pretty, although the water was all muddy and brown when we were there so I doubt I would be considering swimming in the pool that is half way down.
It's a nice and quiet small track. Easy walk from/to the beach.
