The story so far…
Kiwi North as a concept was launched in 2008 with a grand vision for a substantial building programme to bring Whangarei Museum and all its facilities into the 21st Century. Nearly $1 million was raised and all seemed rosy...then the financial crisis hit. Suddenly all the plans were jeopardised and promised sponsorship and backing receded with the shrinking economy.
But, as the saying goes, "when the going gets tough...the tough get going"!
We've re-thought our ideas and our strategy now is to stage the building works. So here we go with Stage 1!
STAGE 1 PLANS:
Completion of the new nocturnal kiwi house including an incubator room for hatching kiwi
New tuatara and gecko enclosures
New displays that entertain and inform visitors of native species protection and conservation
An accessible front entrance
A modern gift shop showcasing local art and a variety of New Zealand made souvenirs.
Builidng is due to start this week, so follow our progress here on Facebook!
