They’re definitely exists better camping spots in New Zealand but it’s free and in a great location, with many spots to park in, next to the Tongariro area and next to a supermarket and gas station. Flush toilets open 24/7 for free, shower and stovetops and dishwashing sinks etc can be rented using a kiwi cash keycard.
Great place to stay! Make sure you get your Penny card from the gas station or coffee cart before arrival $5. You can top it up online. This can be used in lots of locations in NZ.nnWe parked behind the barrier, plugged in, and used the cooktop. All of this cost $21 for three people. We scooted and skated around the empty parks.nnEveryone staying was respectful of others, helping to keep the facilities clean. We woke up with a great view of the mountains.nnAwesome place, will absolutely stay again!
Lovely place to stay for free! Bathroom and sinks are free to use, but washing room, cooking tops and showers you need to pay with a “kiwi cash” toggle that you can buy from the gas station just up the road
You can stay for free if you don’t need a shower of a stove or washing machine.nIt was quite busy, more than 60 campervans / motorhomes / cars.nQueues for toilets, showers and dishwashing.nThe penny card system works but you need an app.
Great facilities and I love kiwicamp all over nz. You can park up free if you don't go through the barriers. There is a small area for those who wish to use power through the barriers and and a massive area for the freedom campers. Washing machine $5. Dryer $8. The views are stunning and the carvings at the gate are amazing.
