Kelmarna Gardens is a city farm and organic community garden on 4.5 acres of council-owned land in Ponsonby, just a few kilometres from downtown Auckland.
On its north-facing slopes are a food forest, bee hives, vegetable plots, a worm farm, hens, a Welsh pony and grazing livestock.
The property was established in 1981 and is managed for the benefit of the community by the Kelmarna Community Garden Trust. From the beginning, the Trust has promoted organic gardening. This excludes the use of chemical sprays and artificial fertilisers. We rely instead on compost, healthy soil, good plant care and natural pest management.
The gardens are maintained by a manager and a team of volunteers. Locals visit to enjoy the tranquil atmosphere or buy organic vegetables, seedlings and flowers. Schools and community groups use Kelmarna to learn about sustainable practices.
Everyone is welcome!
Kelmarna is open to everyone seven days a week through a pedestrian gate at the Hukanui Crescent entrance. The garden manager Adrian is there 5 days a week Monday to Friday from 9:30am-4:30pm.
